Ronald Akers, 64

    WALNUT -- Ronald Dean Akers, 64, Walnut, died January 13 at University of Nebraska Medical Center.    A private family service was held Monday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca with burial in the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut.    Akers is survived by daughters Ranea Sievers of Walnut, Reita (Nate) Larsen of Blair, NE, and Cheri Akers Warren of Hickory, NC; son Ronald Dean Akers, Jr.

Marlys Moore, 89

    HARLAN -- Marlys Gene Moore, 89, Harlan, died Friday, Jan. 15 in Harlan.    Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Friends may call Wednesday, Jan. 20 from 3-8 p.m.

Richard Wittrup, 94

    HARLAN -- Richard D. Wittrup, 94, Harlan, died January 14 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m.

Lady Vikes finish strong to beat Trojans

 AVOCA (Jan. 8) -- The AHSTW girls responded to Tri-Center’s big third quarter with an equally dominant fourth quarter last Friday night, pulling away down the stretch for a 56-45 Western Iowa Conference win. The Lady Vikes (8-4, 5-3 WIC) built a 31-21 halftime lead but were outscored 18-5 in the third to fall behind by three.

HCS narrows superintendent search to eight for screening

    HARLAN – The Harlan Community School Board, following a closed session meeting Monday, Jan. 11, has narrowed its search for a permanent superintendent to eight candidates, with screening interviews set for Thursday, Jan.

Interim superintendent Johnson did not apply

    HARLAN – Interim Harlan Community Schools Superintendent Lynn Johnson announced this week she has not applied for the permanent superintendent position.    Johnson is in her second year as interim superintendent following the resignation of the previous superintendent in 2019, and said in an email to staff this week that she has decided not to stay on in Harlan.

LTC Residents Receive Their Vaccines

    HARLAN -- Elm Crest Retirement Community residents received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine Friday, Jan. 8.    Elm Crest Administrator Tim Nausler said vaccines were delivered by Walgreens as part of a national program with CVS and Walgreens providing the vaccines to care facilities.
 

Birthday Milestones - Alice Kwapiszeski

    OMAHA -- Alice Kwapiszeski of Omaha will celebrate her 100th birthday on January 21. Due to COVID-19, her family is planning a a card shower in her honor.    Cards will reach her if sent to Alice Kwapiszeski, 6006 N. 109th St., Omaha, NE 68164. Alice’s family includes four children: Jeanne, Tom, Peggy and Jerry. Her parents were Henry and Mary (Kramer) Schmitz.

Firefighters hold practice burn on Portsmouth home

    PORTSMOUTH -- Firefighters from the Portsmouth and Persia Fire Departments held a practice burn on a Portsmouth residence Saturday, Jan. 9.  The home had been abandoned and reclaimed by the city.
