Cyclone girls bowlers win Red Oak Tournament

 RED OAK (Jan. 12) -- The Harlan Community girls bowling team won Tuesday’s four-team Red Oak Tournament while the HCHS boys placed fourth. The Cyclone girls posted a winning score of 2,268 to outlast Lewis Central by 43 pins.

Tier 1B Vaccinations Soon

    HARLAN – Shelby County has received 500 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to date, with all being given to health care workers in the county under Tier 1A of the national vaccine distribution plan.    Next up is Tier 1B, and local officials said to watch for the availability of vaccine for those listed in the 1B category.

HCS sees revenues, expenditures increase

    HARLAN – The Harlan Community School District saw an increase in revenues and a decrease in expenditures for the 2019-20 fiscal year, as outlined in its annual audit conducted by Schroer & Associates, PC.    The HCS Board of Education unanimously approved accepting the audit at its regular board meeting Monday, Jan.

Bowling: HCHS sweeps Creston

 ATLANTIC (Jan. 9) -- The Harlan Community bowling teams picked up a pair of dual wins over Creston last Saturday in a meet that was held at the Atlantic Super Bowl Sports Bar & Grill. Despite rolling their lowest team score of the year, the Cyclone girls were able to hold off the Panthers 1984-1936 after being outscored by 28 pins in the Baker games.

Freund, Schwery lead Cyclones to fourth at T-C Invite

 NEOLA (Jan. 9) -- Luke Freund and Jesse Schwery both won individual championships and Zane Bendorf placed second last Saturday to lead Harlan Community to fourth place in the team standings of the Tri-Center Wrestling Invite. HCHS had 10 out of 12 wrestlers place in the top eight (seven in the top four) and scored 138 points - just one behind West Monona for third.

Vikings finish 9th at Rollin Dyer meet

 ATLANTIC (Jan. 9) -- Six out of eight AHSTW wrestlers placed in the top eight last Saturday as the Vikings finished ninth out of 16 teams at the annual Rollin Dyer Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic. Sergeant Bluff-Luton won a tight three-team battle for first place with 176 points, followed by New Hampton/Turkey Valley (174) and Humboldt (171).

Kenneth Foxhoven, 76

    EARLING -- Kenneth John Foxhoven, 76, Earling, died January 16 at Bergan Mercy Medical Center.    Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling with burial in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Earling.  Visitation is Thursday from 2-4 p.m.

Thelma Nelson, 81

    ELK HORN -- Thelma Nelson, 81, Elk Horn, died January 15 at the Salem Lutheran Homes.    Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation is Thursday from 9-11 a.m.

Ted Williams, 94

    HARLAN -- Ted L. Williams, 94, Harlan, died January 15 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.    Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Graceland Cemetery at Knoxville.  Visitation is Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.    Williams is survived by special friends and many students.  He was a former Harlan High School teacher and coach.
 

Robert Stuart, 90

    COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Robert Leroy Stuart, 90, Council Bluffs, died January 14 at Hillcrest Care & Rehabilitation Center.    A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca with burial in the St. Patrick Cemtery at Walnut.    Public visitation is Friday, Jan. 22 from 2-5 p.m.
