Lady Vikes rally past Creston for 4-3 regional win

 AVOCA -- Trailing 3-2 with less than 11 minutes to play in Tuesday’s Class 1-A regional quarterfinal game, the AHSTW girls soccer team wasn’t ready to call it quits on the 2017 season. Senior Olivia Kock tied the score in the 70th minute with her second goal of the match and senior Sarah True added her second goal five minutes later, sending the Lady Vikes past Creston 4-3 and setting up a Region 1 semifinal at eighth-rated Tri-Center (15-2)

Cyclone girls soccer season ends with overtime loss

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community baseball team improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play Tuesday night (May 30), beating Denison-Schleswig 11-1 in five innings. Brett Sears (2-0) pitched an abbreviated three-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the win and Nick Foss ended the game by the rule with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth - the team’s first long ball of the year. Foss also doubled on the night, finishing 2-for-2

 WINTERSET -- The AHSTW girls golf team finished its season by placing fourth in the Class 2-A Regional Final Tournament held May 22 at the Winterset Country Club.

Spartan frosh Anthofer finishes 13th at Anita

 ANITA -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton freshman Jacey Anthofer placed 13th with an 18-hole score of 102 at the Class 1-A, Region 2 girls golf tournament final held May 22 at Crestwood Hills Golf Course in Anita. Anthofer qualified for the regional final by placing fourth at the first-round regional meet in Mount Ayr on May 15. Anthofer’s 102 at the regional final left her six strokes out of medalist contention.

HCHS girls place third in 4-A regional golf tourney

 DENISON -- The Harlan Community girls golf team finished just one spot below state meet contention on Monday, May 22, placing third in the Class 4-A, Region 1 Tournament at Denison’s Majestic Hills Golf Course. Led by Maggie Langenfeld’s 18-hole round of 96, which put her just two shots away from qualifying for state as an individual, the Cyclones posted a score of 408 to come in third out of 12 teams. Humboldt, which went on to win the 4-A s

2017 Relay for Life a Huge Success!

  REGIONAL --  Estimates for Relay for Life’s event fundraising are still unknown.    Even before the event, the 2017 Relay for Life has raised $91,000.    The event Relay for Life is a signature fund-raiser staffed and coordinated by the American Cancer Society (ACS). It is to remember those lost to cancer, to honor survivors and to raise money to “make a global impact” on cancer.    Shelby County is number two per capita in the nation.

Harlan City Council passes fireworks ordinance

HARLAN -- The Harlan City Council passed a fireworks ordinance Wednesday morning, May 31 relating to the sales and display of fireworks within the city limits of Harlan.    The ordinance amends current city ordinance that previously prohibited sales or display of fireworks in the city.  The ordinance was passed to allow for sales and display in Harlan at certain times due to state legislation passed this year that legalized fireworks.    A cop

EMT offers safety tips for accident scenes

    HARLAN -- As an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Dick “Slider” Gilmore has been mistaken for Jesus, the devil, a mental patient, a doctor and the cowardly lion from “The Wizard of Oz.”    Yet before this training, and the 20 years of experience that would follow his EMT training, Gilmore would come upon an accident that would change his life.    The accident, a head-on collision involving a semi, was fatal.

    PANAMA -- Debra Malcom and Jeremy Wittrock both of Audubon exchanged marriage vows on March 25, 2017 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama.
