HCHS boys down WCV in substate opener

 HARLAN -- Perhaps it was only fitting that the Harlan Community boys soccer team’s 15th and final win of the season came on home turf. Improving to 9-0 at Merrill Field, the Cyclones handled an outmatched West Central Valley squad 5-1 Monday night (May 22) in the opening round of the Class 2-A, Substate 8 tournament. HCHS, ranked 15th by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association, improved to 15-2 overall while WCV finished 5-11.

Spartan boys golfers fall short of state meet

 ANITA -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton boys golf team finished one spot shy of a state tournament berth last Friday (May 19) after placing third in the Class 1-A District Tournament at Anita’s Crestwood Hills Golf Course. The Spartans tallied a team score of 343 in cool and wet conditions, finishing behind state qualifiers Coon Rapids-Bayard (329) and North Mahaska (332). There were 10 total teams in the field.

COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Ioma C. Hubbard, 92, Council Bluffs, formerly, Walnut, died May 25 at Northcrest Care and Rehabilitation.    Services will be held Friday, June 2 at 2 p.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut with burial in the Layton Township Cemetery at Walnut. An Eastern Star Service will be held Thursday, June 1 at 7 p.m. Visitation is Thursday from 5-7 p.m.

Keith Allen Jensen

IRWIN -- Keith Allen Jensen, 84, Irwin, died May 25 at the Manilla Manor.    Services will be held Saturday, June 3 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin. Visitation is Friday, June 2 from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m.

Betty J. Olson

AVOCA -- Betty J. Olson, 89, Avoca, formerly of Harlan, died May 25 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Tuesday, May 30 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery. A wake service was held Monday, May 29 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. Visitation was Monday from 3-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m.

NATIONAL BPA HONORS

Five Harlan Community High School students earned outstanding honors at the national Business Professionals of America leadership conference this month, including a national runner-up crowned in Jay Swanson.    Swanson, a sophomore, earned second place in Administrative Support Research Project.  Joining Swanson as top 10 finishers at nationals were Alana Monson, Ellen Keast, Kyle Knudsen and Tyler Schaben.    Monson was fourth in Payroll Acco
