Klein finishes first IWCC track season as juco All-American in decathlon

 HUTCHINSON, KAN. -- Marcus Klein capped a banner freshman season for the Iowa Western Community College track team by placing sixth in the men’s decathlon at the 2017 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 18-20 at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Jean Schechinger, 90

 PORTSMOUTH -- Jean Marie Schechinger, 90, Portsmouth, died June 3 at Montclair Nursing and Rehabilitation.    Services will be held Saturday, June 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Church in Portsmouth with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery at Portsmouth.  A rosary will be held Friday, June 9 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.  Family viewing is Friday from 5-6 p.m.

Alice Martinez, 73

ELK HORN -- Alice Elizabeth Martinez, 73, Elk Horn, died June 4 at the Salem Lutheran Home.    No services are planned.    Martinez is survived by her son, Richard Straw, of Irwin; daughters Susan (Marc) Holm of Defiance, Vicki (Sher Olson) Straw of Minnesota, and Denise Arnold of Council Bluffs; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.    Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan is in charge of arrangements. 

Christian Blum, 83

    HARLAN -- Christian J. Blum, 83, Harlan, died June 5 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services will be held Saturday, June 10 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church in Panama with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery at Panama.  A rosary will be held Friday, June 9 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish Center in Panama.  Visitation is Friday from 4-8 p.m.

Garage, shed fire Tuesday; grease fire Sunday

    REGIONAL -- A shed and garage on 7th and Broadway Streets caught flame at roughly 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, June 6.    The shed and garage both belonged to Paula Koester. Koester, her nine-month-old baby and her brother were home at the time. No one was injured.    The garage and shed were both engulfed and reduced to rubble. The fire melted siding on the house, closest to the room where Koester and her baby sleep.

Shelby County Farmer’s Market opens Saturday

HARLAN -- The farmer’s market will sprout up in the northwest corner of the Shopko parking lot on June 10 from 8:30 a.m.

Hoss new Harlan Police Officer

HARLAN -- Patrolman Jacob “Jake” Hoss (left) is handed his badge by City of Harlan Chief of Police Frank Clark (right). In a ceremony held recently, Hoss was sworn in as a new Harlan Police officer. Harlan man charged with kidnapping, sexual assault

HARLAN -- A 29-year-old Harlan man is in custody charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, domestic abuse/assault and violation of no-contact order.    Theodore James Behrens, 1104 Durant St., faces up to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the first-degree kidnapping charge, a class A felony.  Third-degree sexual assault is a class C felony carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail with an additional $10,000 fine. 

Inaugural Honey/Bacon Fest sizzles into spotlight

HARLAN -- Harlan will be holding its first Honey-Bacon Fest this Saturday, June 10.    The festival will be located at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. Activities begin at 9 a.m. and last until 5 p.m.    The genesis of the idea was the manufacturers within Shelby County. The honey manufacturer, Smitty Bee Honey in Defiance and Monogram Foods in the county.

Open house planned in honor of Tietsorts

IRWIN -- Lyle and Linda Tietsort of Irwin will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house on Saturday, June 24 from 2-4 p.m. at the Irwin Community Building. Friends and relatives are invited to attend.
