Lady Vikes win regular-season finale, 4-0

 AVOCA -- Sarah True scored a pair of goals and Olivia Kock and Hailey Haynes both scored once as the AHSTW girls soccer team blanked Riverside 4-0 in its regular-season finale on May 22. The game was halted by thunderstorms in the 45th minute. The Lady Vikes did all of their scoring in the first half, capped by Katie Anzalone’s assist to Haynes in the 32nd minute. Morgan Eckmann finished with four saves.

Vikings’ perfect season ends in O.T. heartbreaker

 TREYNOR -- A perfectly-placed 40-yard bomb in the first minute of sudden-death overtime brought a heartbreaking end to AHSTW’s undefeated season last Wednesday night (May 24) as Treynor stunned the 10th-ranked Vikings 2-1 in a Class 1-A, Substate 8 boys soccer semifinal. Following a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation, Treynor’s Connor Wiggins launched a long shot that found the top-left corner of the net just 27 seconds into O.T. Wiggins’ score

Cyclones bow out to eventual state-qualifier Winterset

 EARLHAM -- A season full of highlights ended two wins shy of a state tournament berth last Wednesday (May 24) when Harlan Community lost to Winterset, 5-1, in a Class 2-A, Substate 8 boys soccer semifinal at Earlham. The 8th-ranked Huskies (15-1), who advanced to state with a 1-0 win over No. 2 Sioux City Bishop Heelan on Saturday, led HCHS 3-0 at halftime and pulled away with two goals in the final six minutes, four seconds.

Cyclone boys tennis team finishes strong at conference and districts

 REGIONAL -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team wrapped up its 2017 season with a pair of strong showings earlier this month, placing third at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Tournament in Atlantic (May 8) and placing fourth at the Class 1-A District Tournament in Carroll (May 11). The Cyclones’ fourth-place district finish left them just three points shy of advancing to Preliminary Substate team competition.

Cyclones blank Kuemper 8-0 in H-10 baseball opener

 CARROLL -- So far, so good, for the 2017 Harlan Community baseball team. Sophomore Brett Sears and freshman Connor Bruck combined on a four-hit shutout Tuesday night (May 23) and HCHS pulled away in its final two at-bats to shut out Kuemper Catholic, 8-0, in a battle of preseason state-ranked teams. Taking advantage of five Kuemper errors and mixing in some timely hits, the top-ranked and defending Class 3-A champion Cyclones (2-0) scored all

HCHS routs Carroll

 CARROLL -- Harlan Community opened defense of its Class 3-A state baseball title with an 11-run first inning on Monday night (May 22), eventually finishing off a young Carroll team 14-0 in five innings. Connor Bruck went 3-for-3 at the plate for HCHS while Dillon Sears, Brett Sears and Kyle Schmitz all had two-hit games, including a double by Schmitz and a Dillon Sears triple.

Cyclones walk off with wild 13-12 softball win

 HARLAN -- On a wild opening night featuring five lead changes, 25 runs and 24 hits, the Harlan Community softball team struck last to outslug Underwood 13-12 Monday (May 22) at H.

Schmitz-Staley will exchange June vows

    CARROLL -- Stephanie Marie Schmitz and Austin Michael Staley both of Harlan will marry on June 10 at the Carroll Train Depot in Carroll.    Stephanie is the daughter of Paula Bielenberg, Harlan, and Steve Schmitz, Westphalia. Austin is the son of Tami Bowman, Salem, OR; and Perry Staley, Dunlap.

Harlan couple marks 50 years of marriage

HARLAN -- Jim and Dixie DeBlauw of Harlan will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on June 3.    Their family includes Lori and Travis Castle, Treynor; Jenny and Jeff Moser, Harlan; and Tom and Cassie DeBlauw, Kirksville, MO. The DeBlauws have eight grandchildren.

Open house will honor Bob Kuster’s 90th birthday

PERSIA -- Bob Kuster of Persia will be honored at an open house in honor of his 90th birthday on Saturday, June 10  from 2-4 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Persia.
