Bruce A. Nelson, 69

    WALNUT -- Bruce A. Nelson, 69, Walnut, died June 15 at the Nebraska Medical Center.    Nelson is survived by daughter Pam Burrack of Cedar Rapids; step-daughter Laurie Baker of Texas; sister Connie (Gerald) Christensen of Virginia; brothers Brian Nelson of Council Bluffs; Todd Nelson of Harlan; and caregiver Amy Thomas.    Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan is in charge of arrangements.

Sharon G. Hartvigsen, 82

    HARLAN -- Sharon G. Hartvigsen, 82, Harlan, died June 15 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.    A memorial service was held Thursday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton. Visitation was held on Wednesday, June 21 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.

Steenhusens mark 60 years of marriage

    IRWIN -- George and Pat Steenhusen of Irwin will observe their 60th wedding anniversary on June 23.    Their children are requesting a card shower in their honor. Cards will reach them if sent to 204 Eva Street, Irwin, IA 51446.

Bonnie Knight celebrates 90th birthday in June

    HARLAN -- Bonnie Knight of Harlan will mark her 90th birthday on June 24. Her family is planning a card shower in her honor. Cards will reach her if sent to 1301 Lincoln Avenue, Harlan, IA 51537.

Agnes Riesgaard, 83

    ELK HORN -- Agnes Ann Riesgaard, 83, Elk Horn, died June 9 at the Salem Lutheran Home.    Services were held Tuesday, June 13 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avoca with burial in the Graceland Cemetery at Avoca.  A prayer service was held Monday, June 12 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca.  Visitation was Monday from 5-8 p.m.

Merlin Irlmeier, 83

    MANNING -- Merlin “Mox” Robert Irlmeier, 83, Manning, formerly of Templeton, died Monday, June 5 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Tuesday, June 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton with burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton.    Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday, June 19 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m.

HCHS Foreign Language students headed to Peru

    HARLAN -- Harlan Community High School’s Foreign Language Club is taking a group of 21 to tour Peru for a little more than a week to see sights such as Machu Picchu.    The group is comprised of 13 students, six adults and two teachers. The trip will last a total of nine days.    In Peru, the group will be able to see famous tourist attractions such as Machu Picchu, an Incan citadel settled almost 8,000 feet high in the Andes Mountains.

REGIONAL -- When’s the last time you took into consideration whether a car would have cup holders? A door? How about a rear windshield?    Penumbra – lovingly nicknamed “Penny” by the team – is the first of the solar cars made by the PrISUm Solar Car Team that has many of these features.    The team stopped by Shelby County Monday afternoon after running ahead of schedule on their Sun Run 99-county tour across Iowa.

He’s building a tiny house

IRWIN -- Most people don’t sign up to live in close quarters.    David Tietsort of Irwin is not most people. Tietsort has decided to build a tiny house based on a trailer. The home can be hitched onto the back of the man’s truck and taken anywhere.    The “tiny house movement” as it has come to be called is both an architectural and social movement.
