Cyclones go the distance, but lose to Atlantic

It’s often that sports can come down to the little things like communication or one or two plays going differently. That certainly proved to be the case for the HCHS varsity volleyball team as Thursday night at home, they battled the Atlantic Trojans and dropped three of five sets played after having a 2-1 advantage on them heading into set four.

TeamMates pep rally

HARLAN — A TeamMates Pep Rally is scheduled for Oct. 6 at 8 a.m. at The Grounds.    “The TeamMates Pep Rally is to spread the word to our community about our amazing mentoring program we have here in the Harlan community,” said Courtney King-Crum. “We will have current mentors and board members present.

Healthiest State Initiative urges people walk, connect

HARLAN — Time to get on your walking shoes.    The Healthiest State Annual Walk will be held on Wednesday. Since 2011, the Healthiest State Initiative has engaged hundreds of thousands of Iowans in schools, worksites and communities across the state to walk for 30 minutes.

Kolbe becomes general manager

HARLAN — With nearly 40 years of service to the Harlan Newspapers, Mike Kolbe has been named General Manager of the twice-weekly publication. Kolbe has been the long-time advertising manager, and will continue with many of those duties, along with additional responsibilities in his new role.    Publisher Josh Byers made the announcement Sept.

Teacher, basketball coach remembered

    HARLAN — When Mitch Osborn looked back, three rows up to the right from the bench, he saw Cliff Tamm and his wife, Judy, supporting Harlan basketball.    Cliff Tamm, 88, died Sept. 24.    “They are great community members and always Harlan Cyclone fans.”    When Osborn was coaching his Elk Horn team, he said Tamm treated the Elk Horn team like his own.    “He was a very positive person, a positive coach and very likeable,” Osborn said.

Spartans drop three straight to the Wildcats

Tuesday at home, the Exira-EHK varsity volleyball team welcomed the Glidden-Ralston Wildcats to town but it did not go their way, as they dropped three straight matches, losing the final set by 11 points.
In set one, the Wildcats were dominating, early and eventually winning, 25-10. The Spartans came back stronger in game two, only dropping the set 25-22.

‘Glow, Fight, Win’

    HARLAN — The Shelby County Planning and Zoning Commission heard feedback from community members about the CO2 pipelines at a public hearing Friday.

The Harlan School District has enrolled with STOPit, by STOPit Solutions.
STOPit is an online reporting tool designed to deter and mitigate bullying, cyber abuse, and other inappropriate behaviors, consisting of an app and a back-end incident management system for school administrators. 
Our students will have access to the STOPit mobile app, which has two simple but powerful features.

At 33, Will Epperly wins title of World Champion Auctioneer

Will Epperly of Dunlap auctioned off his first calf at age 7 while sitting on his grandfather’s lap in Virginia where he grew up. Now, at 33, Epperly is this year’s  world champion auctioneer. After 12 years of competing for the title, Epperly received the title in June from the Livestock Marketing Association.Though it seems a lengthy endeavor, Epperly said he doesn’t regret the time it took.“It’s been so much fun these past 12 years.
