Fire Prevention Week educates kids in schools

SHELBY COUNTY — Students in Shelby County had the opportunity to learn about fire safety during Fire Prevention Week. Fifth-graders from Shelby County Catholic School learn about lifesaving equipment the from Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen. The Harlan Fire Department uses unique items in case someone is trapped in a grain bin, including an auger. Students at AHSTW Elementary School received training from the Walnut Fire Department.

Marilyn Pauline Holdren, 95

Marilyn Pauline Holdren, the daughter of Harry and Mildred (Findlay) Peterson, was born August 9, 1927 in Rural Harlan, Iowa. She was raised on her family’s farm and attended the Congregational Church  in Harlan. Marilyn attended country school in Shelby County, Iowa and graduated from Harlan High School in Harlan, Iowa.

Martha Ann Gross, 85

Martha Ann Gross, the daughter of John Leo and Agnes Mary (Coppersmith) Stoll, was born on the family farm near Clyde, Missouri, on July 29, 1937, the tenth of 13 children. She received the sacraments of Baptism, Penance, Eucharist, Confirmation, and Matrimony at Immaculate Conception Basilica in Conception, Missouri.

IKM-Manning Marching Band is 2A Urbandale Marching Invitational Winner

The IKM-Manning Marching Wolves won top awards at the Urbandale Marching Invitational Oct. 1. They competed against four other 2A bands, taking first place and receiving the award for best color guard.

Harlan Community Theatre will hold open call auditions for ‘Boeing Boeing’

HARLAN — The Harlan Community Theatre will hold open auditions for Boeing Boeing, a mid-season production planned for early February 2023.Producer Megan Sorensen said, “This is the first time we have done a mid-season play (no music!) and the first time we’ve taken the show on the road.”There are two shows planned for the Therkildsen Center in Harlan; one performance will take place at the German Hausebarn in Manning; and one at the 4 County B

Kids in the Village cares for young ones

ELK HORN — It can get noisy, but joyful at the Kids in the Village Day Care. Some kids cry while others cheerfully play with the toy in their hand. Others get a bottle while another’s diaper is changed.

Jose Leal

Jose Leal was born to Petra and Jose Leal Sr. on July 2, 1939 in Denver Colorado. As a kid, Jose attended school at Bryant Webster Elementary and later graduated from North High School in Denver, Colorado. He was baptized and confirmed at Holy Ghost Church in Denver, Colorado.Jose enlisted in the Army in 1956 and trained as a combat engineer in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. However, he took a drastic career change and became a paratrooper.

Gail Clarence Schmitz, 78

Gail Clarence Schmitz, son of Hugo and Augusta (Block) Schmitz, was born at the Schmitz home June 3, 1944 in Earling, Iowa. His sister, Arlene, was sent to the neighbor’s home for “vacation,” and when she came home, she had a new baby brother.  Gail was baptized on June 4,1944 and confirmed on May 4,1956 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, where he remained a lifelong member.  He attended St.

Eduardo Salazar, 16

Eduardo Salazar was born to Herendira Salazar on September 15, 2006 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended school at Buena Vista High School in Omaha, Nebraska.Eduardo was blessed to become a big brother to four younger siblings: Teodoro, Ruby, Sergio, and Julian. He loved being a big brother and spending time with his siblings. Eduardo also enjoyed playing video games and watching Youtube videos. You could always count on Eduardo being social.

Terry Clarence McDowell

Terry Clarence McDowell was born on January 23, 1937 to Victor Luke and Sarah (Robinson) McDowell in Harlan, Iowa. Terry spent his early years on a farm east of Kirkman, Iowa.  Following the death of his dad, the family lived for a short time in Hamburg, Iowa before returning to the farm by Kirkman.
