Leslie Herbert Blum, son of Herbert M. and Marie Ann (Wingert) Blum was born April 5, 1941, in Westphalia, Iowa.  He attended St. Boniface School in Westphalia, where he graduated with the class of 1959.  He entered into the United States Army, serving his country honorably until his discharge in 1964.On October 9, 1965, Les was united in marriage to Janet Funk at St.

Spartans shut down by Bulldogs on Senior Night

The Exira-EHK varsity volleyball team lost to Boyer Valley Tuesday night at home in three consecutive sets, 25-12, 25-21 and 25-22.
But before the game, Seniors Quinn Grubbs, MaKenna Larson, Shay Burmeister and Makenzie Riley were honored. It was also Pink Out Night, with many wearing pink to show support for breast cancer awareness month.

Open house planned for Kramer’s 90th birthday

 OMAHA — Earling native Leo J. Kramer of Omaha  will be observing his 90th birthday. To celebrate the occasion, an open house will be held from 2-4 p.m.

When Emerald Ash Borer strikes

HARLAN — When the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was found in Harlan trees in February, the city had just over 330 ash trees in the right of way. Today that count stands at 270. The count of ash trees on private property is unknown.

TeamMates holds pep rally

HARLAN — Many gathered Thursday at The Grounds for a TeamMates pep rally.DeMoine Adams, TeamMates CEO, provide an introduction about the program that began 31 years ago. It was cofounded by Tom and Nancy Osborne.The program is in 192 school districts, serving more than 10,000 students and in five states.“We feel like we just got started,” Adams said.

Laura Ann (Andersen) Allen, 88

 Laura Ann (Andersen) Allen was born on May 16, 1934, on the family farm northeast of Avoca, IA, to Ernest and Lillian (Johnson) Andersen.  She was baptized at English Lutheran Church in Avoca on July 16, 1934 and was confirmed on her 14th birthday on May 16, 1948.  She attended country school for eight years and then attended and graduated from Avoca High School on May 17, 1951.Even though Charlie and Laura Ann attended high school together,

Marian Rose Pauley, 84

Marian Rose Pauley, age 84, of Neola, Iowa, passed away September 30, 2022 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Marian was born in Vail, Iowa on January 25, 1938 to the late Frank and Mary (Cavanagh) Schwieso. She lived on a farm outside of Vail before moving to Neola in the 1940’s. Marian attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Neola graduating in 1956. She attended college in Ottumwa, Iowa before returning to Neola and taking a clerk job in Omaha.
