Vrchoticky signs LOI to go swim at Olivet Nazarene University

Elaina Vrchoticky, a senior at HCHS has signed a Letter of Intent to go swimming at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. following the conclusion of her high school days.

Open house scheduled for Conductix-Wampfler

The public is invited to celebrate the 30th year of Conductix-Wampfler in the Harlan community. An open house for the public will take place Sept. 23 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., which will include guided tours.

First BINGO prizes claimed; $1,500 still up for grabs

SHELBY COUNTY — Having completed both the “N” and the “I”,  the first $50 prizes were claimed in the Harlan Newspapers’ BINGO contest Thursday, Sept. 8.

40th annual Carstens Farm Days

SHELBY — Rain cancelled the parade Saturday, but the 40th Annual Carstens Farm Days still drew a crowd for the weekend event, held Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12.
Iowa Farm History was showcased at the Carstens 1880 Farmstead, featuring threshing, sawmill operators, crafters and vendors, and several tractors. 

Steam and gas engine antique show returns for year 45

The Greenridge Steam and Gas Engine Antique Show is returning for the 45th year on Sept. 17 and 18. Located 1 mile south, 1 mile west and 1 ½ miles south of Irwin, this year’s event includes entertainment for the whole family.
Henry and the Haymakers, a local country band, will perform a show on Sept. 18 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Harlan senior receives national scholarship

Harlan Community Schools senior Gabrielle Gaul was honored with the National Rural and Small Town Award through the College Board.
Gaul said she found out about the award through an email from the College Board notifying her of her eligibility to apply. Her GPA, PSAT score, and living in a small town are all qualifications that she met to be eligible for applying. 

Reading for Ukraine

The Harlan Community Library is encouraging people to read, as well as support the children of Ukraine through a unique program. The 30-day program is for anyone in the community who wants to participate of any age.
“The mindset is we are supporting Ukraine and the people of Ukraine,” said Emily Kurth-Christensen, youth services librarian. “We have packets for people to pick up or it’s on the website.”

Vikings drop three of four to the Cardinals

With a large crowd in attendance, along with several students at the AHSTW Vikings gymnasium cheering enthusiastically, the varsity volleyball team was hoping to come out and take it to the Treynor Cardinals, but unfortunately dropped three of the four games they played Thursday night.
The Vikings lost game one, 25-10; Came back to win the second game, 25-22; Then dropped the final two games by scores of 25-19 and 25-13.

IKM-Manning kicks off Homecoming Week Monday

IKM-Manning’s Homecoming Week 2022 will be held next week, with a week of spirit days and preparations starting Monday, September 12 and culminate with the pep rally, parade, and big game on Friday, September 16.A community pep rally will be held in the IKM-Manning High School gym in Manning at 1:15 p.m. Friday, September 16. Please remember that school doors are locked during the day and will open for the pep rally at 1 p.m.

9th Annual Southwest Iowa Art Tour: Connecting Rural Communities Through Art

  AREA ­­—  The Southwest Iowa Art Tour is gearing up for its ninth year connecting rural communities through art. This year’s event will be held Friday, September 16, Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18. In 2014, a group of southwest Iowa artists came together to pull off a regional event to connect their rural communities – a self-guided ‘Art Tour’ that would showcase their artworks, studios, galleries, and hometowns.
