Cecilia Haynes, 64

Cecilia Haynes was born July 23, 1958  in Omaha, Nebraska. Cecilia’s parents Henry and June (Schmidt) Dukat married in 1956 and raised her and her siblings Gary, Monte, Edwinna, and Valorie in Gretna, Nebraska. During her childhood, she enjoyed taking care of her horses, including riding and grooming them. She was involved in 4H- training her dog Tidbit, the Chihuahua Terrier Mix, winning several trophies. She had a love for animals.

Paul Robert Schroder, 89

Paul Robert Schroder was born on August 15, 1933 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Aaron and Mina (Eckert) Schroder.  He attended grade school in Council Bluffs and then moved to Hancock, Iowa with his mother.  He attended school and graduated from Hancock with the class of 1951.  Paul was baptized and confirmed at the Silver Creek EUB Church in Hancock. After high school graduation Paul went right to work farming where he would spend the next 71 yea

Kenneth Eugene Kohl, 75

Kenneth Eugene Kohl, son of Julius and Georgia (Nixon) Kohl, was born on November 27, 1946 in Neola, Iowa.  He graduated from Avo-Ha High School in 1964.  On June 14, 2007, he was united in marriage to Patti Herrick at the Audubon County Courthouse in Audubon, Iowa.  Kenneth started working at the age of 16, when he worked at an Alfalfa Mill and then for Bud Carsten on his farmstead.  He went on to start his own Tractor/Farm Machinery painting

Gail William Foxhoven, 75

Gail William Foxhoven, son of Laverne and Odelia (Gaul)  Foxhoven was born on July 18, 1947 in Portsmouth, Iowa. As a child, Gail attended and graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Earling, Iowa.

Lisa was born to Charles and Marlys Martens on January 22nd, 1962 in Harlan, Iowa. She was the youngest of three children with two older brothers Gary and Hal. Lisa was raised in the rural Walnut area where she developed a love of animals, the Denver Broncos, and grew to love cycling. Lisa graduated from Elk Horn-Kimballton High School in 1980.

Spartans go the distance and win over Crusaders

After three sets played, the Exira-EHK Spartans varsity volleyball team was trailing 2-1, but came back to finish off the Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders by winning the final two sets, 25-15 and 15-8.
With this victory, it marks the ninth on the season. The Spartans were shorthanded for these games only have nine girls available, including the absence of Senior Makenzie Riley, but played hard and were determined to win.

Monogram for Kids gathers grant winners

HARLAN – Ten local organizations received foundation grants from the Monogram Foods Loves Kids Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Monogram Foods. A committee of team members at the Monogram Foods manufacturing facility in Harlan, IA divided a total of $60,000 between the charities.    Several of the recipients gathered Thursday to meet each other and share how their grants will help their organizations.

Harlan Municipal Utilities (HMU) reviewed the results of its annual audit at the HMU board meeting Thursday, September 29. Results from the audit, which was conducted by Gronewold, Bell, Kyhnn & Co.
