School Board sets public hearing for Nov. 1

HARLAN — The Harlan Community School District Board of Directors heard about school safety plans, addressed bond issues and began a discussion on legislative priorities at their regular board meeting Monday.HCSD Superintendent Jenny Barnett said there are several special board meetings that will be planned to get the process moving for the bonds. Nov. 1 is a special board meeting and public hearing on the sales tax bond at 5:15 p.m.

Harlan Community Fall Concert Tuesday

HARLAN —  Songs rang out at the Harlan Community School District fall concert on Tuesday. Seventh and eighth-grade choir, bass choir, treble choir, concert choir and all state audition students performed various works.

Way back when every class was in single room

HARLAN —     Eighty Harlan Community School first-graders went back in time to a one-room school house in Panama on Tuesday.
Betty Reinig and her husband, Ed, presented what it was like, what they had to do. The teacher had to get the stove going to heat it up and make sure everything was ready. She had eight grades in one room.
 

Vikings season cut short by Lady Reds

Wednesday night on the road, the AHSTW Vikings varsity volleyball team battled the Missouri Valley Lady Reds (32-6) in the Class 2A Region 3 Quarterfinal, but lost in three straight sets; 25-12, 25-6 and 25-16.
The Vikings were led by Freshman Halle Goodman with 12 assists, Junior Delaney Goshorn with two blocks and Senior Grace Porter with 12 digs. It was not enough as the Lady Reds overpowered them en route to victory.

Board of Supervisors hears support for zoning ordinance at public hearing

 SHELBY COUNTY ­— The Shelby County Board of Supervisors held the first of three public hearings regarding a zoning ordinance establishing setbacks for hazardous liquid pipelines.   Approximately 25 people attended the public hearing Tuesday, October 18, where the Board unanimously approved the first reading of Ordinance 2022-4.

Dazzling Divas bring Fun Pianos! to Panama

PANAMA — The Dazzling Divas Relay For Life team is 28 members strong and is excited to host an evening of dueling pianos with Fun Pianos! on November 4 at St. Mary’s Hall in Panama.  Doors will open at 6:30 for the evening, with the show starting at 7:30. Tickets for the event are $25 per person, which includes snacks.  Drinks are also available for purchase.

Manning holds “Charters of Freedom” dedication

 MANNING — A dedication ceremony was held for Iowa’s first “Charters of Freedom” display located in Manning Friday, October 14. The dedication, hosted by the city of Manning and Foundation Forward, Inc., celebrated the permanent display of replicas of The United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and The Bill of Rights.  The monument is located at the Hausbarn Heritage Park next to the Carroll County Freedom Rock. Participan
