Rex Hugo Ploen, 99

Rex Hugo Ploen (1923-2022) 99,of Denver, CO passed away on October13,2022. He was born in Shelby,Iowa to Hugo and Emma Ploen.Rex served in the U.S. MarineCorps as an aviator during World WarII from 1942-1946 flying a Hellcat offthe US Block Island and left serviceas a Captain.After serving Rex returned to Iowawhere he attended the Universityof Iowa from 1946-1950.

Philip Alvin Burmeister

Philip Alvin Burmeister was born November 14th, 1943, in Harlan, Iowa to Harry and Mena Burmeister. Phil was the youngest of seven children in a family that consisted of twins, a single, triplets, and then Phil. He attended all 12 years of school and graduated from Harlan in 1962.

Marianne Jane Pauley, 93

Marianne Jane (Savereide) Pauley was born on January 10, 1929 in Harlan, IA to Arthur H. and Luella S. (Comstock) Savereide. She was baptized at United Methodist Church in Harlan. She graduated from Harlan High School in 1947. Marianne was united in marriage to Richard W. Pauley on February 15, 1948 and shared 74 years of marriage. Three children were born to this union:  David, Joni, and Jill.

Kayleen C. (Langenfeld) Johnston

 Kaleen Cecelia Johnston was born on August 18, 1954 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was the daughter of Ray and Janice Stessman. She was a 1972 graduate of the Harlan Community High School. She then attended the Creighton University School of Nursing, graduating in 1976 and received her Registered Nurse license. She was united in marriage to Paul S. Johnston at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, on June 5, 1976.

Chuck Lyon

Chuck Lyon, son of Rose and William Lyon was born on December 4, 1940 in Harlan, Iowa. After graduating high school, he enlisted to the Army National Guard for 5 years until he was honorably discharged. He was married and had two sons, Chad and Scott.Chuck was a talented construction supervisor, building roads and friendships his entire career.

Barbara Joan Brundige, 87

Barbara Joan Brundige, age 87, of Irwin, IA passed away peacefully on October 2, 2022. She was born December 16, 1934 to Thomas and Florence (Dahlmeier) Knowlton. Private family services are being planned.Barb is preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald “Sprout” Brundige; and Kaoly Brundige (daughter-in-law).

Supervisors approve second reading of zoning ordinance, final public hearing scheduled for Tuesday

 SHELBY COUNTY —The Shelby County Board of Supervisors held the second of three public hearings regarding Ordinance 2022-4 Tuesday, October 25 at 10 a.m. at the C.G. Therkildsen Activity Center  in Harlan.

Marching to a Division 1 rating in Treynor

HARLAN — The Harlan Community Marching Band received a Division I rating for their performance at the state contest by the Iowa High School Music Association in Treynor on Oct. 13.“The bands who have marching programs are assigned to a particular site and are able to present their field show for adjudication and the results are in the form of ratings, with 1 as superior, 2 as excellent and 3 as a good rating,” director Bill Kearney said.

Harvest Fest returns to the square this weekend

HARLAN —The 21st annual Harvest Fest will take place on Saturday.“The Harvest Fest committee is pleased we are able to bring back some Harvest Fest favorites this year, including cookie decorating.The lineup is also changed the line up this year. The $1 movie, “Surf’s Up”, will begin at 10 a.m. All other events are from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the candy walk around the square from 1-2 p.m.
