Mustangs gallop on Cyclones in opener

The HCHS varsity softball team opened their season Monday night against the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs, dropping the game 16-0 in three innings.
“Any ball that was put into play and was playable, we caught or we played it out, so I felt like they did a really good job with all of the playable balls,” said Cyclones Head Coach Brandi Eckles. “Something that we definitely need to work on right away is more hitting.”

Cyclones season ended by Saintes at home

Junior Sainte Ella Klusman scored two goals in the second half of Tuesday’s soccer match at Merrill Field against the Cyclones, effectively ending their season.
“We’ve had a lot of successes this year,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jared Boysen. “There’s a lot of things to be thankful for. The effort was there and we knew it was going to be a battle. We knew it was pretty even both ways. I’m proud of how we played.”

Harlan local helps build hammock site in Manteno Park

 AREA —Manteno Park near Earling is now home to a brand new hammock site thanks to future Eagle Scout Veronica Buman.As part of her work toward becoming an Eagle Scout, Buman focused her project on creating a hammock site in a typically underutilized section of the park. This campsite was underused due to its slope.

Skål! It’s Tivoli Fest time in Elk Horn

 by Renée Brich, Lifestyles ELK HORN — Elk Horn will celebrate all things Danish American at the 43rd Annual Tivoli Fest Friday, May 26 and Saturday, May 27. Friday’s Happenings  The celebration begins Friday with a new event at the Fire Station, Olive or Twist from 3 - 11 p.m. Mixed drinks and Iowa, Denmark, and domestic beers will be available. Danish hot dogs will be for sale while supplies last starting at 6 p.m.

Cyclones bring home third place trophy

Nine Cyclones represented Harlan Community High School at the track and field state championships at Drake Stadium over a 3-day spread, which included the boys taking home a third place trophy and multiple Cyclones bringing home individual medals.
