Donald Michael Springman

Donald Michael Springman was born Feb 9, 1939 to Nick and Anna Springman in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was the youngest of 6 brothers and sisters. He graduated from St Mary’s Catholic School Portsmouth, Iowa. After serving 3 yrs in the United States Army he moved back home to Portsmouth and started farming close to the family farm.

Leo Joseph Hahn, 95

Leo Joseph Hahn was born on June 9, 1927 to Joseph and Dorothy (Mueller) Hahn in Rural Earling, Iowa. Leo was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, where he remained a lifelong member. He attended grade school and high school at St. Joseph’s School in Earling.   He graduated in 1945. In 1950, Leo enlisted in the United States Army. He drove a fuel truck for two years and was awarded a bronze star in Korea.

Richard F. Leinen “Digger”

Richard F. Leinen (Rich) (Digger) son of Joe and Caroline (Stinn) Leinen was born February 18, 1934 in Portsmouth IA. He was baptized and confirmed in Our Lady of Fatima church in Portsmouth. He graduated from Portsmouth school in 1952.Rich was united in marriage to Alma Kramer on May 4, 1954.

Several on trap team shine well at conference finals

Over the weekend, the HCHS trap shooting team had their final meet including several personal bests, a streak Head Coach Jason Paulsen said he hopes will continue at the upcoming state competition in Cedar Falls.

Cyclones drop 4th game to open season

Wednesday night on the road, the HCHS varsity baseball team took on the Sioux City East Black Raiders, dropping that game 10-6.
The damage primarily came in the second and third innings, where the Cyclones gave up a 3 runs and 6 runs the following inning.

Cyclones get mauled by Tigers

The early struggles continue for the HCHS varsity softball team dropping their third consecutive game to open the season against the ADM Tigers via the mercy rule, 10-0.

Programs and activities planned at Prairie Rose

HARLAN — Several programs and activities are planned over Memorial Weekend at Prairie Rose. Kayaking: Saturday, May 27 at 10:00 a.m.  Attendees will meet on the east side of the lake/east side of County Road M47.  Kayaks, life jackets, and paddles will be provided.  Instructors will go over basic water safety and paddling and head out to paddle.
