Cyclones win in PK shootout on road

Thursday, the HCHS girls varsity soccer team went on the road to battle the West Central Valley Wildcats, winning on a penalty kick shootout 2-1, for their second consecutive victory and fourth in the last five games.

Cyclones place 6th in Golf Sectionals

Wednesday at the Fox Run Golf Course in Council Bluffs, the HCHS boys varsity golf team competed in the 3A Sectional against seven other schools, placing 6th with 349 stroke, 22 behind the winner Winterset.

The battle for Boomer

 AREA  — A seven-year-old dog who was found wandering in Kimballton last week has become the center of a battle between his original owners and the Animal Rescue League of Harlan. When James Charleston noticed the dog last week, he was “in awful condition,” James’ wife, Heather said. “He was scared and smelled like rotten meat. He could barely stand up and his bones were showing.

Cadet Great Start Program will take flight in Harlan

 HARLAN — The skies above Harlan will soon be buzzing with youth orientation flights. The Southwest Iowa Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol (CAP) will be hosting a Cadet Great Start Program for all  12-18 year old youth interested in joining its sublight (also known as Harlan Flight).

Donahoo joins Cyclones as new Athletic Director

HARLAN — Harlan Community High School has hired Southwest Valley High School football coach Anthony Donahoo to be it’s new Athletic Director. Current AD Davis Pattee has stepped down from that role and will be taking on the role of principal at AHSTW.

Cyclones dismantled by Titans at home

Monday night at home, the HCHS boys varsity soccer team ran into a buzz saw facing the 10-5 Lewis Central Titans, dropping the game 8-1.
“Lewis Central has got a lot of speed and very good ball skill,” said Cyclones Head Coach Dave Voge. “Most of those guys play together on club teams all year round and you can tell by that.”
Junior Titan Brayden Shepard got the Titans on the board first with a goal 23 seconds into the game.

Cyclones drop match to Titans at home

The Lewis Central Titans came to Merrill Field Monday night against the HCHS girls varsity soccer team and defeated them 3-1, with two goals coming from Senior Gracie Hays.
“We knew they were tough up front,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jared Boysen. “They have three or four girls that scored quite a few goals, so we knew we needed to stay in front and we played more defense and didn’t have as many offensive opportunities.”

Anderson commits to Northwestern for soccer

Cyclone Senior Mason Anderson recently signed a Letter of Intent to play soccer at Northwestern College in Orange City following the conclusion of his high school career.
“I am very happy to be able to play soccer at a collegiate level,” Anderson said.
Anderson talked about what made him choose Northwestern where he will be majoring in business management.
