Vikings 9-run third inning key to victory

With the game tied at three in the bottom of the 3rd inning, Senior Viking Logan Akers was hit by a pitch, giving the Vikings its first lead of the night that started a 9-run rally, leading to a 13-3 five inning mercy rule win at home Thursday.
With this win, the Vikings improve their record to 5-2 overall and get back in the win column after a tough 7-1 loss in their previous game against Council Bluffs Jefferson.

New church finds historic home

Harlan -- Walking through the towering brick church building at the corner of 7th Street and Victoria in Harlan two months ago, one would have found many relics from the congregation that used to gather there for services. Hymnals sat in stacks on the pews. Books lined the shelves. A vase of silk flowers even graced the altar.

Harlan Senior Center to close congregate meals

HARLAN — The Harlan Senior Center will be closing its congregate meals due to lower meal counts and decreased funding from the government.The Harlan Senior Center has held congregate meals for roughly 30 years. Prior to the pandemic, it was a popular event due to the social aspect of it. After the pandemic, meal counts started to decrease, which led to the meal program being canceled.

Junkin in June returns for a second year

HARLAN — Junkin in June is back for its second year with a new twist. Roughly 70% of the proceeds from the event will be donated to send teens to the Champions 4 Christ youth camp in Branson, MO. This camp is five days long and combines fun activities and powerful messages with the goal of bringing teens closer to God.The 2nd Annual Junkin in June will take place on June 10.

Cyclones swept in softball doubleheader

The HCHS varsity softball team early season struggles continued Tuesday night at home as they hosted the Creston Panthers in a doubleheader, dropping both games and got outscored 26-2.
“I think right now, they’re really just working on their mental toughness and getting better every single game with that,” said Cyclones Head Coach Brandi Eckles. “I have yet to ever see them give up.”

Cyclones sweep Panthers in doubleheader

After being down 7-0 early, the Cyclones fought their way back to an 8-7 victory in game one of their doubleheader Tuesday against the Creston Panthers. Senior Cyclone Cael Goshorn hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th inning to win the game.
“I was thinking base hit wins it, so first good pitch I get, swing it,” Goshorn said.

Doran and Reinert wed in August ceremony

URBANDALE — Katelynn Doran and Adam Reinert, both of Urbandale, exchanged vows at St. Augustin Catholic Church in Des Moines Saturday, August 13, 2022. Rev. Pat Davitt officiated the double ring ceremony. Parents of the bride are Randall and Ann Doran of Harlan. The groom’s parents are Tim and Lisa Reinert of Glenwood. The bride was escorted down the aisle by her father.
