HARLAN — Following the recommendation of the Parks and Recreation Board, the Harlan City Council voted Tuesday to increase the starting pay of lifeguards and raise admission prices for the upcoming season at the Norman D.

HMU, City of Elk Horn and Regional Water among recipients of USDA Rural Development investments

STATEWIDE – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director in Iowa Theresa Greenfield announced the Agency is investing $21,457,000 in loans and $4,695,000 in grants to provide clean, safe water and promote economic growth in rural Iowa communities as part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda. Area recipients include Harlan Municipal Utilities, Regional Water, and the City of Elk Horn.

Supervisors approve salary increase for elected county officials

SHELBY COUNTY — The Shelby County Board of Supervisors voted to give elected  county officials a salary increase in 2025.The increase was approved following a recommendation by the Shelby County Compensation Board, represented at the February 20 meeting by Ruthann Grimsley.

Margaret “Marg” Ann Olson, 93

Margaret “Marg” Ann Olson was born to Peter and Esther (Nelsen) Nelson on April 6, 1930, on the farm near Goldfield, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove, Iowa. When Marg was a young girl, her family moved to a farm west of Eagle Grove. She attended country school in Wright County and graduated from Eagle Grove High School with the Class of 1947.

Kristine Kay Thielen

Kristine Kay Thielen, daughter of Larry and Kathleen (Kasperbauer) Kington was born May 17, 1969 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa.  She was baptized at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa.  She attended grade and high school at Irwin-Kirkman Community School.After high school, Kristine attended beauty school at Hair by Stewarts.

Betty Ann (Lundeen) Lundergard

Betty Ann (Lundeen) Lundergard was born December 8th, 1929 to Blanche (Reel) and Martin Lundeen on a farm near Loveland, Iowa. She had four sisters and one brother. Two of her sisters passed away before reaching adulthood. Betty graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1948. After graduation she worked in Missouri Valley in the drug store at the soda fountain and as a Western Union operator.
