Jane Ellen Wilwerding was one of eleven children born to Irene and Carl Wilwerding. She was born in Earling, Iowa along with her twin sister Judy Thraen. Jane attended several different elementary schools as a child and eventually graduated from Woodbine High School.In 1961, Jane chose to enter religious life with the Sisters of St. Francis in Dubuque, Iowa and was professed in 1969.
HARLAN — Students from Harlan Community High School’s Business Professionals of America (BPA) Chapter have qualified to attend the 2024 BPA National Leadership Conference in Chicago May 10-14.Those attending the National Conference advanced from the State Leadership Competition held in Des Moines February 18 - 20.Chad Swanson and Mark Kohorst sponsor the Harlan Community BPA.
SHELBY COUNTY — Candidate filing for the June 4 Primary Election began March 4 and will continue until 5 p.m. March 22. Shelby County Election Commissioner Mark Maxwell said all paperwork must be received at the Shelby County Auditor’s Office within this time frame. Maxwell, who is also the Shelby County Auditor, announced he will not be filing papers to run in the primary.
IKM-Manning students Taylor Beckendorf, Alikxa McGinn, Raegan Garrison, and Addisyn Bandow took home second place in the 4x800 with a time of 11:06.91 at the BVU HS Elite Meet Friday.
With a small roster, the HCHS Cyclones girls golf team has big plans for the upcoming season.
“It’s really exciting,” said Junior Cyclone Macy Mueller. “We have me returning, Ella Freund, and Kara Kenkel.”
After its 2023 campaign in which the HCHS Cyclones girls soccer team finished with a 14-5 record, they are back to practicing preparing for a new season.
After a season in which the girls finished 7-14, and the boys went winless with an 0-14 record, the HCHS Cyclones Tennis team is ready to get back to work on the courts.
Senior Cyclone Erica Rust took home MVP Honors at the KMALand All-Star Basketball Classic in Clarinda, scoring 16 points and adding 16 rebounds.
“It’s definitely a really special moment and feeling,” Rust said. “Just knowing you’re playing against a lot of other girls that are very good basketball players in KMALand and being able to win the MVP Award was very special.”

Senior Cash Emgarten started off his final season of Spartan Track & Field with top 10 performances in the 60 and 200m dash at the Indoor Track Meet in Ames, finishing 8th in both events with time of 7.30 and 23.52, a personal best for him.
