Wingert commits to Peru State for cross country

Cyclone Senior Lauren Wingert will be continuing her cross country career at the collegiate level following the conclusion of her high school days at Peru State.
“I am super excited to get to run with new amazing people at Peru State,” Wingert said. “Getting to compete at a college level is going to be so much fun and push me to my limits. I am glad I am able to have this opportunity to continue my cross country career.”

Spartans open golf season with Triangular

Despite losing a lot of seniors, the Exira-EHK Spartans golf team is optimistic as it prepares to tee-off March 26 in a triangular with CAM and AHSTW.
“It has been fun so far this year,” said Spartan Head Coach Tom Petersen. “It's great to have a lot of kids out that will be competing for spots with 16 kids.  Hopefully we get some nicer weather so we can get on the course more.”

Vikings open season against Raiders at home

After a struggle during their 2023 season in which the AHSTW Vikings boys soccer team finished 5-9, losing 3-1 in the 1A-8 First Round Tournament Game to St. Albert, the Vikings are back to work set to open their season March 25 at home.

Cyclones track wins 4x100 and 4x200 events

Even with a small event featuring just seven schools, the HCHS Cyclones boys track and field team came away with some big accomplishments Tuesday at the Simpson High School Classic winning both the 4x100 and 4x200 events with times of 44.59 and 1:32.97 that featured Matthew Sorfonden, Lukas Francis, Brehden Eggerss, and Hayden Soma.

Cyclones hope to drive the golf team to success

The HCHS Cyclones boys golf team is back at practice at the Harlan Golf & Country Club set to open a new season in a few weeks.
“They for sure are going to be ready to play in about a week and a half to two weeks,” said Cyclone Head Coach Chad Swanson. “We play April 2 against Denison at home, and that’s only one of our two home matches.”

Cyclones Boys Soccer opens March 25 at Panorama

After a season in which the HCHS Cyclones Boys Soccer team finished with an 8-8 record, they are back to practice, set to open their season March 25 on the road against the Panorama Panthers and expecting a better than .500 record this year.

Alfred J. Pauley

Alfred J. Pauley was born December 13, 1935 in Panama, Iowa. He was the fifth child of Leo & Louise (Schmitz) Pauley. Alfred was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic church. He attended St. Mary’s elementary school through high school. After schooling he joined the United States Army in 1957 and proudly served in Korea until 1958.

John Raymond McKeighan, 91

John Raymond McKeighan, 91, died on Friday, March 1, 2024, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley. He was born on October 11, 1932, in Tennant, Iowa to George and Elsa (Davis) McKeighan. John grew up in the Portsmouth area and attended school in Portsmouth. On May 6, 1953, John married Lotus Patten at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Portsmouth. To this union three children were born, Pat, Cindy and Kathy.

Joyce Ann Kenkel

Joyce Ann Kenkel, daughter of Odelia (Gaul) and Lavern Foxhoven, was born June 20, 1945 in Westphalia, Iowa.  She was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church.  She made her first communion at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa and was confirmed at St.

Melvin J. Bruck

 Melvin Bruck, son of Tony & Marie (Mary Bissen) Bruck, was born on February 11,1945 in Earling, Iowa. He was one of 10 children with 4 brothers and 5 sisters. Melvin was baptized, had first communion, and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, where he remained a lifelong member. He attended school at St Joseph’s in Earling and graduated in 1963.After high school he joined the National Guard.
