She was baptized, confirmed and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Panama with the class of 1942. She attended the College of Mount Saint Scholastica at Atchison, KS and the University of Nebraska in Omaha, NE. She graduated as a registered nurse from Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA in 1947.She worked at St.

Phyllis Marie (Buttler) Kline, the daughter of Kenneth Buttler and Marjorie     Rumelhart was born October 22, 1934, at her parents’ home in Fansler, Iowa and died January 21, 2024 in Harlan, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 2 months, and 30 days.Phyllis was baptized at the Exira Christian Church. She attended the Exira     Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1953.

Luise passed away peacefully at her home in Harlan, Iowa on March 19, 2024.Born Luise Gier in Baasem, Germany on February 23, 1933, to Aloysius and Maria (Keop) Anna Gier. She met her husband, Robert Brockhoff Sr, while he was in the US Air Force stationed in Germany.

Lisa Shafer, age 56 of Stillwell, KS, entered into Heaven on April 1, 2024 surrounded by her family.On October 18, 1967 a beautiful baby girl, Lisa Renee Claussen, was born to Hilton and Mary Claussen in Seneca, KS.Lisa grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa with her mom raising her three children in the Catholic faith.

Rudolph resigns from Harlan City Council

HARLAN  — Harlan City Council Member Jeanna Rudolph has resigned her position. Mayor Jay Christensen announced Rudolph’s resignation during the April 2 council meeting.Rudolph has represented Ward 3 on the Council since 2018, and will remain on the council until May. Christensen said the position will be filled by appointment. A public notice will be published, and interested individuals have until 4:30 p.m.

SHELBY COUNTY — Shelby County is in a good financial position according to an audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023.Chris Nelson, president of Gronewold, Bell, Khynn & Co., PC of Atlantic presented the report to the Shelby County Board of Supervisors April 2.“There was nothing new or unusual,” Nelson said.

Supervisors vote to sell Shelby County Annex building

SHELBY COUNTY — The Shelby County Board of Supervisors voted to sell the County Annex building during a meeting held Tuesday, April 2.The building, located at 719 Market Street in Harlan, will be sold though a sealed bid process, with a minimum required bid of $256,000, the building’s appraised value. Three tenants are currently renting space in the annex, however there is still ample space not being used.

Less than 24 hours after the HCHS girls track and field team competed in the Koos Invitational at Merrill Field, they were off and running at the Denison-Schleswig Co-Ed event where they took home a 4th place finish with 90 points, just nine behind Tri-Center who won the event.
