Kroger, Rudolph elected to Harlan City Council

COUNTY – Incumbent Sharon Kroger won re-election to the at-large seat and newcomer Jeanna Rudolph won the race for the open ward 3 seat in the only two contested races for office in Harlan Tuesday.    Unofficial vote totals show Kroger defeated challenger Phillip B. Perkins 200-157 in votes, while Rudolph defeated fellow newcomer Larry J. Trickel 70-48 in votes.

National conference important for HCS Board

HARLAN – Harlan Community Schools Superintendent Justin Wagner thinks attending a national conference is important for the HCS Board of Education members, and he’s hoping it’s possible to offer that opportunity again in 2018 after a year off.    The National School Boards Association annual conference will be held April 7-9 in San Antonio, TX.  Wagner said he’s not sure if the district can pull off sending board members this year, but he says

    GREENFIELD -- Gary Ross Brewer, 80, Greenfield, died November 1 at Treasure Coast Hospice in Port St. Lucie, FL.    Services will be held Friday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at Shelby United Methodist Church in Shelby with burial in the Shelby Cemetery.  Visitation is Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

    WEBSTER CITY -- Donna Lauritsen, 79, Webster City, died Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Van Diest Medical Center.    Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m.

Holiday Adoption Program begins

REGIONAL – Needy families will get some help from generous donors this holiday season as part of the annual Adopt-A-Family Christmas program in Shelby County.    The Christmas season is just around the corner and a few families already are signed up for adoption.    Since the program was first started 60 years ago by the Harlan Newspapers, more than 4,100 low-resource families in need of assistance have had a merrier holiday season.  In 2016,

ELK HORN -- The World Æbleskiver Major League Eating Contest in Elk Horn was the recipient of a tourism award during the Iowa Tourism Conference held recently.    The Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa presented 27 awards recognizing excellence in the tourism industry at a ceremony in Sioux City during the 2017 Iowa Tourism Conference last month.
