William Rasmussen, 82

    MIDDLETON, WI -- William Louis Rasmussen, 82, Middleton, WI, died October 24 at the Attic Angel Place Health Center.    Graveside services were held Monday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. at Layton Township Cemetery at Walnut.    Rasmussen is survived by brothers Dennis (Sherry) Rasmussen of Madison, WI and Gary (Sue) Rasmussen of Safford, AZ.    Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of arrangements.

Hairspray

HARLAN – It’s the 1960s and there’s change in the air!    The Harlan Community High School Drama Department will present this week its production of Hairspray, the winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs.    Performances are slated for Thursday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 4, each at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Nov.

Ordinance changing fireworks dates, times sees first approval

    HARLAN – The Harlan City Council has approved the first reading of an ordinance amending its fireworks code, limiting the display of fireworks in Harlan to only two days.    The council voted 6-0 Tuesday, Oct. 17 amending chapter 41 of the city’s ordinance regarding dates and times of fireworks.  The second reading is expected at the next meeting of the council on Tuesday, Nov.

Absentee voting open through Nov. 13

COUNTY -- Shelby County Auditor Mark Maxwell says absentee ballot requests were sent to all mailing addresses available to his office, to the available addresses in Portsmouth, Kirkman, Westphalia, Panama, Tennant and Defiance.    Absentee ballots postmarked on Monday, Nov. 6  or earlier and received by noon Monday, Nov.

She beams as she says the best part of her job as a farmer is that each day is different and brings new challenges.    She returned a year ago with her young family to Shelby County to farm with her dad and grandfather. She says she has never been happier to be outdoors all day long working the farm ground.

Harvest Season Gains Speed

REGIONAL – Acceptable harvest weather finally greeted farmers this past week allowing the agricultural community to make up some time after a less than ideal early October.    Mike Naig, Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, said rainy weather in late September and early October kept farmers out of the fields, but farmers had a good week last week as the weather turned warmer and drier.    “Much of the state finally received some nice harvest

Russells mark 25th wedding anniversary

DENISON -- Bill and Sue Russell of Denison marked their 25th wedding anniversary on October 24. They celebrated at an afternoon open house on August 12 at the Yellowsmoke Shelterhouse near Denison.    Their family includes Megan and Ben Claypool, Ames; Katie Russell, Denison; Sarah Russell, Denison; Joe and Angie Russell, Boone; and Kama Russell, Tucson, AZ. The Russells have five grandchildren. 

Marie Monahan marks 95th birthday in November

    HARLAN -- Marie Monahan of Harlan will mark her 95th birthday on November 7. Her family is requesting a card shower in her honor.
