 MANNING -- IKM-Manning senior Peyton Gross has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. Peyton is the daughter of Paul and Joy Gross, rural Manilla. Joy Gross, who is the head softball coach at IKM-M, also played college softball at BVU.

Seven area players selected for KMAland Senior All-Star Slam

 GLENWOOD -- Four senior volleyball players from Harlan Community and three from Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton have been selected to compete in the KMAland Senior All-Star Slam set for Sunday, Nov. 26, at Glenwood High School.

Low turnout for election

COUNTY -- The City of Kirkman had the highest voter turnout in the county for the Tuesday, Nov.

Heese wins after lots drawn

COUNTY -- Ron Heese will serve as a city councilperson in Kirkman.    Both Heese and Sonny Goans each received five votes for an open council seat.  When the city election was canvassed Tuesday, Nov. 14 by the Shelby County Board of Supervisors, lots were drawn for the seat and Heese’s name was selected.    Shelby County Auditor Mark Maxwell said Heese is certified as the winner.

Ordinance changing fireworks dates, times sees second approval

roved the second reading of an ordinance amending its fireworks code, limiting the display of fireworks in Harlan to only two days.    The council voted 6-0 Tuesday, Nov. 7 amending chapter 41 of the city’s ordinance regarding dates and times of fireworks.  The third reading is expected at the next meeting of the council on Tuesday, Nov. 21.    The amendment now allows for shooting off fireworks only on July 4 from noon-11 p.m.

Beware of scam saying they are Internal Revenue Service

HARLAN -- The Harlan Police Department has recently received a number of complaints that revolve around a common scam.    Citizens are getting phone calls that claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service.  Caller says that they will go to jail unless they call back a phone number and arrange payment.    This is a reminder that the IRS will never contact you by phone. This is a scam.
