Work to resume soon on city’s audit investigation

HARLAN -- The Iowa Attorney General’s office has assigned personnel to investigate a special investigative report from the state auditor’s office that outlined $144,872.32 in improper and unsupported disbursements tied to former Harlan City Administrator Terry Cox.    Current city administrator Gene Gettys, Jr.

Leinens mark 60th wedding anniversary

    COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Joe and Jeanette Leinen of Council Bluffs will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on November 28. Kenkels will celebrate 50 years of marriage

EARLING -- Gloria and Jack Kenkel of Earling will mark 50 years of marriage on November 18. They celebrated earlier this year with a trip to Cancun, Mexico with their family.    Their children include Lisa Carlsen, Sycamore, IL; Paul and Gail Kenkel, Story City; Amy Kenkel and Keo Jorgensen, Omaha; and Jill and Mark Schmitz, Panama. The Kenkels have 11 grandchildren.

Ellsworth Shannon marks 100th birthday with party

IRWIN -- Ellsworth Shannon will celebrate his 100th birthday at an open house party from 2-5 p.m. at the Irwin Community Building on Saturday, November 25. Impressive Final Numbers for Foss Despite not scoring a touchdown in Thursday’s semifinal loss to Pella, Harlan Community senior running back Nick Foss finished as the Cyclones’ all-time co-leader with 71 career touchdowns (426 points), tying the school record set by Dylan Barrett from 2008-2010. Foss scored 38 total TDs this fall, finishing three behind Kevin Kruse’s single-season record of 41 set in 2004.

Cyclone libero Craig signs with Bellevue University

 HARLAN -- Harlan Community senior volleyball standout Sidney Craig signed a national letter of intent during the 2017 season to play collegiately at Bellevue University, a highly successful NAIA program located in Bellevue, Nebraska. Craig completed an outstanding three-year varsity career for the Cyclones this fall, playing her second season at libero after being a defensive specialist on the 2015 state runner-up team as a sophomore.

Spangenberg set to join IGCA Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame

 HARLAN -- Former Harlan Community volleyball coach Angie Spangenberg will be one of four inductees into the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association Volleyball Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame for 2017. The Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 18, in Carroll as part of this year’s Senior All Star Weekend.

Harlan Community flag football draws 96 kids

 HARLAN -- A total of 96 area kids in grades 3-6 participated in Harlan Community’s 2017 Flag Football program under the direction of Cyclone football coaches Curt Bladt, Sam Brummer and Matt Hoch. The season was held over six weeks this fall with games played on five Sunday afternoons (one week was rained out). The third and fourth grade division played at 1:00 p.m., followed by the fifth and sixth grade division at 2:30.

Cyclones facing 3-time champion Dutch in 3A semifinal game

 CEDAR FALLS (Nov. 9) -- Two of Class 3A’s powerhouse football programs will clash at the UNI-Dome Thursday when sixth-ranked Harlan Community meets fifth-ranked Pella in a semifinal matchup of 10-1 teams.
