Vikings shoot well in rout of Griswold

 AVOCA (Jan. 30) -- The AHSTW boys knocked down 9-of-16 threes and shot 61 percent overall here Tuesday night, beating Griswold 79-24 for its fourth consecutive win. The Vikings exploded out of the gate with a 27-4 lead after one quarter and pulled ahead 48-13 by halftime. Eleven Viking players scored on the night, led by Jake Martin with 15 points, R.J. Harris 12 and Joey Cunningham and Kevin Jorgensen with 11 apiece.

IKM-M girls win big over Tri-Center

 MANNING (Jan. 30) -- The IKM-Manning girls generated 34 Tri-Center turnovers with their full court pressure and shot 65 percent from the field in Tuesday night’s 73-22 home win over the Trojans. The 14th-ranked (2A) Wolves, who have now won 11 of their last 12 games, raced out to a 22-6 lead after one quarter and extended the margin to 52-17 at halftime and 68-18 after three.

Lady Vikes hit 9-of-13 treys in rout of Tigers

 AVOCA (Jan. 30) -- The AHSTW girls basketball team extended its winning streak to three games Tuesday night and evened its Western Iowa Conference record at .500 with a commanding 65-35 home win over Griswold. The Lady Vikes, now 8-11 overall and 8-8 in the WIC, scored at least 14 points in every quarter and built on a 10-point halftime lead by outscoring the Tigers 18-5 in the third.

District football assignments released; playoff field remains 16 teams per class

 AREA (Jan. 25) -- The Iowa High School Athletic Association last Thursday released the new district football assignments for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Smitty Bee Honey featured in Netflix documentary

    DEFIANCE -- Smitty Bee Honey, Defiance, has a featured role in the first episode of the Netflix series Rotten, a documentary on the food supply chain airing now on Netflix.    Camera crews spent a day filming at the Defiance location, and Smitty Bee Honey is featured in the first episode, Lawyers, Guns and Honey, of the six-episode series.  Both owner Doug Schmitz and general manager Tony Schmitz appear in the film.

City of Harlan, union enter negotiations

    HARLAN – The City of Harlan and employees represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Iowa Council 61 exchanged initial bargaining proposals last week.    After proposals were exchanged, the groups entered closed session for negotiations.    The union, representing employees of the public works department and police department, is requesting a five-year agreement with 1.5 percent wage increases

    PANAMA -- Kelsey Leinen and Taylor Assmann both of Woodbine exchanged marriage vows at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama on August 19, 2017.
