Girls Basketball: Wolves start fast, rout Eagles

 MANNING (Jan. 25) -- The IKM-Manning girls scored the first 13 points of the game and pulled away in the second and third quarters to beat Underwood 75-47 on Thursday night, posting their 10th consecutive victory. IKM-Manning knocked down 10-of-22 three-pointers on the night, including five by Kia Rasmussen (5-of-8) and three by Shauna Reitan (3-of-8).

Underwood boys top IKM-Manning

 MANNING (Jan. 25) -- Underwood took control with a 10-0 run in the third quarter and made 15-of-18 free throws Thursday night to beat the IKM-Manning boys 60-45 in Western Iowa Conference action. IKM-M had cut a 13-point deficit to 38-32 in the third when the Eagles made their run.

HCHS boys extend bowling win streak to six duals

 HARLAN (Jan. 25) -- The Harlan Community boys bowling team extended its dual winning streak to six on Thursday with a 104-pin victory vs. Nodaway Valley, 2392-2288, at Cyclone Lanes. HCHS (6-1) also picked up recent wins over Tri-Center, 2796 to 2094, on January 20 at Minden and 2796 to 2732 over OA-BCIG on January 18 at Ida Grove. The Cyclone girls, meanwhile, are 1-6 on the year following a recent stretch of one win and two defeats.

Viola Ostebee, 92

    AUDUBON -- Viola Mae Ostebee, 92, Audubon, died Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Manning Regional Hospital.    Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Church at the Hausbarn Heritage Park in Manning with burial in the Manning Cemetery.    Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.  There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m.

Donald Norgaard, 95

    ELK HORN -- Donald Madsen Norgaard, 95, Elk Horn, died January 29 at the Salem Lutheran Home.    Services will be held Friday, Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Family greeted friends Thursday, Feb. 1 from 6-8 p.m.

Supervisors organize; Parkhurst named new board chairman

    COUNTY – Charlie Parkhurst has been named chairman of the Shelby County Board of Supervisors this year, and will preside over a board that is currently working diligently to prepare next year’s budget.    Parkhurst is joined on the board by supervisors Steve Kenkel and Roger Schmitz.    Parkhurst was unanimously elected chairman while Schmitz was unanimously elected vice-chairman of the 2018 board.    Besides tackling the budget this month

Connell retiring; HCS to absorb position

    HARLAN – Harlan Community High School Principal John Connell has announced that he will be retiring at the end of the current school year.    The HCS Board of Education approved his early retirement request at its regular meeting Monday, Jan.

Myrtue proposes slight tax levy decrease

    HARLAN -- Myrtue Medical Center Board of Trustees has set Tuesday, February 27 at 7:30 a.m. as the public hearing date and time on the tax asking proposal for 2018-2019. The MMC board is proposing to lower the current tax levy rate from $1.22 to $1.20792 per thousand taxable valuation for 2018-2019.    The public hearing will be held in the Auble Conference Center at MMC in Harlan.
