Cyclone girls fall to Titans, 69-33

 HARLAN (Feb. 10) -- The Harlan Community girls finished the regular season with a lopsided defeat Saturday night as 2nd-ranked Lewis Central pulled away behind a 17-0 first-half run and beat the Cyclones 69-33. The score was 9-7 when LC rattled off 17 unanswered points en route to a 39-14 halftime lead.

    HARLAN -- Virginia Mae (Jensen) Schnack, 84, Harlan, died Friday, Feb. 9 in Harlan.    Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan with burial of ashes in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 3-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-8 p.m.

Tim Dunlevy, 79

    AVOCA -- Tim Dunlevy, 79, Avoca, died February 11 at his home.    Services will be held Friday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avoca with burial in the Graceland Cemetery at Avoca.  A wake service was held Thursday, Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca.  Family greeted friends Thursday from 5-7 p.m.

FIREFIGHTER AWARDS

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Fire Department held its annual Awards Banquet and Firefighter Recognition on Saturday evening, Feb. 3 at the C.G Thirkildsen Center. Firefighters were recognized for years of service and special achievements.    “The Harlan Fire Department has been fortunate in our recruiting efforts with 10 new members that have joined the fire department during the 2017 calendar year,” said Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen.

Hospital CEO delivers message to staff regarding Des Moines Register’s exposé on Dr. Fung

John Barrett, 94

    AVOCA -- John C. Barrett, 94, Avoca, formerly of Shelby, died Friday, Feb. 9 in Harlan.    Services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home with burial in the Shelby Cemetery.  Friends were asked to call Monday, Feb. 12 from 2-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 4-7 p.m.

Theresa Blum, 87

    WALNUT -- Theresa M. Blum, 87, Walnut, died Thursday, Feb. 8 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 17 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut with burial in the St. Patrick Cemetery in Walnut.  A wake service will be held Friday, Feb. 16 at 7:15 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca. Visitation is Friday from noon-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 4-8 p.m.

HARLAN – Harlan Community High School’s Parker Jones and Andrew Shelton have been nominated by their judges at State Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) contest as Outstanding Performers in Group Improvisation, and they will perform at the all-state speech festival this weekend.    Speech Director Lisa Hagemeier said the duo’s accomplishment highlighted a state competition that saw HCHS participants perform extremely well Saturday, Feb
