IKM-M sweeps Griswold

 MANNING (Feb. 6) -- The IKM-Manning girls and boys basketball teams finished the regular season with decisive wins over Griswold Tuesday night, the girls rolling to an 85-16 romp and the boys winning 68-27.

Bowling: HCHS girls top Falcons by 87 pins

 HARLAN (Feb. 1) -- Led by Jayden Gessert’s two-game set of 336, the Harlan Community girls bowling team outscored OA-BCIG by 87 pins (2,193-2,106) at Cyclone Lanes last Thursday to pick up its second dual win of the season. The Cyclones (2-6 overall) avenged a 147-pin loss to the Falcons in Ida Grove two weeks earlier. The results also reversed in the boys half of the meet as OA-BCIG defeated HCHS by 44 pins (2,654 to 2,610).

Betty Aken, 89

    HARLAN -- Betty Aken, 89, Harlan, died February 7 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m. at First Assembly of God Church in Harlan with burial in the Shelby Cemetery.  Family will greet friends Saturday from 10-11 a.m.

County rescinds support for branch name change

    COUNTY – Shelby County has rescinded its support for a name change of the East Branch of the West Nishnabotna River due to new information about future costs to property owners should they need to update the abstract for their property.    The Shelby County Board of Supervisors this month rescinded an earlier motion for that support.    Supervisor Steve Kenkel had said Shelby County received correspondence from the U.S.

Harlan utilities approves cable rate increase

HARLAN – The Harlan Municipal Utilities has raised cable rates to meet increasing programming costs.    The HMU Board of Trustees approved the rate increases at its regular meeting Thursday, Jan. 25.  Basic cable rates will increase $5 from $25.99 to $30.99 per month.  Expanded basic cable will increase $7 from $78.99 to $85.99 per month. 

Courthouse closing procedures spelled out

Smith-Stetzel wed

    ELK HORN -- Laura Christine Smith and Tate Douglas Stetzel exchanged marriage vows at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church on September 30, 2017. Boells will mark 50 years of marriage

    MANILLA -- Kenneth and Cherryl (Anderson) Boell of Manilla will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary today, February 9. The couple will celebrate with a private dinner with their children.

Kenkels celebrate 60th wedding anniversary
