    PERSIA – Robert Frances Leinen, 79, Persia, died March 30 at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital.    Services will be held Tuesday, April 3 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Church in Portsmouth with burial in the Valley View Cemetery in Persia.  A wake service was held Monday, April 2 at 7 p.m. at the church.  Visitation was Monday from 4-7 p.m.

HCS Board okays raises for all staff

Danish Inn Restaurant comes tumbling down

ELK HORN -- Demolition crews tore down the Danish Inn building in Elk Horn last month, paving the way for a new project in the works that could include a new restaurant on the site.  In 2015 the Danish Inn closed, and in August, 2017, Mike and Lou Howard of Elk Horn purchased the property with hopes of restoration.  Due to years of sitting empty and costs of restoration, it was determined the best option would be to take the building down and

Voge goal lifts Cyclones past Treynor in 2018 opener

 TREYNOR (March 29) -- Drew Voge’s goal midway through the first half proved to be the game winner Thursday as Harlan Community held off Treynor 1-0 on a cold opening night for high school boys soccer. In a non-conference matchup of two teams with good speed and stingy back lines of defense, Voge scored the only goal - a left-footer - with 22:50 left in the first half.

Hansen golds highlight Cyclone showing at Denison meet

 DENISON (March 27) -- The Harlan Community track teams both placed third at Tuesday’s Monarch Co-Ed Relays in Denison, combining for five gold medals and 186 points in the first scored meet of the season. Junior Chloe Hansen was the Cyclone standout of the night and one of six athletes to win two individual golds.
