 HARLAN (April 5) -- Playing her first round of competitive golf in three years, Harlan Community senior Lexie Holloway shot a medalist round of 49 on Thursday, leading the Cyclone girls to a 20-stroke win over Denison-Schleswig (222-242) in the season opener at the Harlan Golf and Country Club. East Mills also attended the meet but did not have enough golfers to post a team score. Holloway, who was last out for golf as a freshman, shot par on

Denison tops HCHS in girls tennis

 HARLAN (April 5) -- Senior Nicole Lange notched wins at number one singles and doubles Thursday but the Harlan Community girls tennis team came up short in the other seven varsity matches vs. Denison-Schleswig, losing 7-2 in the season opener for both squads. Lange defeated Denison’s Jazlyn Beeck 8-4 in the number-one singles match, then teamed with Taylor Andersen for an 8-4 win in number-two doubles.

Monarch boys blank Cyclone tennis team

 DENISON (April 5) -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team suffered a 9-0 dual setback at Denison-Schleswig Thursday, dropping to 1-1 on the season. The Monarchs (1-0) controlled most of the varsity matches from start to finish, with the closest outcome taking place at number three doubles as the Cyclone team of Lucas Schmitz and Jack Buman lost 7-10 vs. Caleb Seuntjens and Austin Freese.

Streit starts off strong at Central

 PELLA (April 3) -- Central College freshman thrower Gillian Streit was recognized on Tuesday as an Iowa Conference Performer of the Week in women’s track and field following her outdoor season debut in last week’s Central Invitational (March 29-30). A 2017 Harlan Community High School graduate, Gillian is the daughter of Paula Streit, Manilla, and William Streit. Streit received her IIAC honor in the field events category after placing second

Rita Mueller, 93

    WAUKESHA, WI -- Rita (Hodapp) Mueller, 93, Waukesha, WI, formerly of Harlan, died March 29.  Visitation is Tuesday, April 10 from 9-10:15 a.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Brookfield followed by a Mass at 10:30 a.m.  Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.

Larry Shepherd, 84

    WALNUT -- Larry Shepherd, 84, Walnut, died Wednesday, April 4 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Villisca.    A celebration of life visitation with family will be held Saturday, April 14 from 2-4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Walnut.  A private family inurnment will be held at a later date at Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter.    Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda is in charge of arrangements. 

Nancy Pauley, 80

    EARLING -- Nancy Pauley, 80, Earling, died April 4 at the Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling.    Services were held Monday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Church in Portsmouth with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth at a later date.    Pauley is survived by her husband, Lloyd Pauley, of Portsmouth; daughters Debra (George) Martens of Shelby, Deanne (Edward III) Idar of Durango, CO and Christine M.
