Lange signs with Buena Vista

 HARLAN -- Harlan Community senior Nicole Lange has signed a letter of intent to continue her basketball career at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. Nicole is the daughter of Mac and Tatum Lange, Harlan. Lange led the Cyclone girls basketball team this past season by averaging 12.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game and was named second-team All-Hawkeye Ten Conference.

Peppers earns MVP honors at KMA all-star event

 AVOCA (March 18) -- Six players from the Harlan Newspapers’ coverage area combined to score 74 points here Sunday night in the inaugural KMAland All-Star Classic at AHSTW High School. Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton’s Sophia Peppers scored a game-high 20 points in the girls contest and received MVP honors for her team.

Lady Vikes, Cyclones earn five golds at BVU indoor meet

 STORM LAKE (March 17) -- The AHSTW and Harlan Community girls track teams combined for five gold medals and 16 top-10 finishes while competing at Saturday’s BVU High School Elite indoor meet at Buena Vista University. Race winners for the Lady Vikes included Heidi Hall in the 1,500-meter run (5:23.16), Josie Denning in the 400 dash (1:05.97) and Ryann Portch in the 800 (2:33.14). The Cyclone girls won two events: Chloe Hansen in the 60-meter

Chamberlain, Harris named third-team All-State

 DES MOINES (March 13) -- Harlan Community senior Shane Chamberlain and AHSTW senior R.J. Harris were both named third-team All-State this week by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association. The IPSWA announced its inaugural boys basketball all-state teams on Tuesday, honoring the top 24 high school players in each class and also selecting Muscatine senior Joe Wieskamp as the 2018 Mr.

AHSTW to host KMAland All-Star Classic

 AVOCA -- Six area girls and boys basketball players and one local coach will be taking part in the inaugural KMAland All-Star Basketball Classic, set for Sunday, March 18 at AHSTW High School in Avoca. A total of 40 seniors from KMAland have been selected for the event, which will start with the girls all-star game at 5:00 p.m., followed by the boys game. The evening will also include a 3-point shooting contest and former Tri-Center star Cary

Local players selected for Shrine Bowl

 SIOUX CITY (March 13) -- Senior football players Nick Foss of Harlan Community, AJ Sieh of AHSTW and Ben Sorenson of Tri-Center have been selected to play for the South Squad in the 2018 Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star Game on Saturday, July 21, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Foss, Sieh and Sorenson attended Tuesday night’s Abu Bekr Shriners media day along with their parents at the MTA/Shrine Centre in Sioux City.

Rueschenberg, Kaster win gold at indoor meet

 VERMILLION, S.D. (March 13) -- Kara Rueschenberg and Greichaly Kaster both won individual races on Tuesday to highlight Harlan Community’s performances at the season-opening Bob Prince Early Bird Indoor Track Invite, hosted by the University of South Dakota at the Dakota Dome. Rueschenberg won the girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:58.85 while Kaster won the 3,000 in 12:05.47.

Middle school bowling camp

 HARLAN -- For the second straight year, a group of Harlan Community Middle School students attended a bowling camp at Cyclones Lanes which was hosted by the high school bowling teams. The five-session camp allows the middle school students to get an inside look at what the high school team does in preparation for competition while also teaching some of the fundamentals of the sport.
