Former Harlanite Forrest “Pete” Petersen marks 95th birthday

    GOODYEAR, AZ -- Former Harlan resident Forrest “Pete” Petersen will celebrate his 95th birthday on April 7. His family is planning a card shower in his honor. His wife is the late Dorothy Petersen. 

Reitan signs with Graceland

 MANNING -- IKM-Manning senior Shauna Reitan signed a letter of intent during the 2017-18 season to play basketball and continue her education at Graceland University in Lamoni. Reitan, a 5-foot-7 wing player, earned second team All-Western Iowa Conference honors as a senior after helping the Wolves finish 18-5 overall (15-3 in the WIC) and advance to the Class 2A regional finals.

HCHS wins two events at Boone

 BOONE (March 22) -- Competing with a mix of varsity and JV athletes, the Harlan Community boys won two events during Thursday’s Carroll track meet at Boone. The meet was moved due to ongoing renovations at the Carroll football field.

Register honors Schulte as Iowa Coach of the Year

 DES MOINES -- Glenwood boys basketball coach Curt Schulte, a Westphalia native, has been recognized as the Des Moines Register’s All-Iowa Boys Basketball Coach of the Year. Schulte, who graduated from Harlan Community in 1989, guided Glenwood to its first boys basketball state title earlier this month following wins over Norwalk, two-time defending Class 3A champion Cedar Rapids Xavier and Oskaloosa.

Football schedules released for 2018-19

 REGIONAL -- The Iowa High School Athletic Association on Wednesday released the 2018 and 2019 schedules and non-district opponents for the state’s 331 prep football programs. The season will open on Friday, August 24, this fall for the area’s four teams, with Week 9 falling on October 19. In 2019, the regular season will begin on August 30 and finish on October 25.
