    HARLAN -- Richard Alan Jones, 80, Harlan, died August 19 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services will be held Friday, Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  A rosary will be held Thursday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at the church.  Visitation is Thursday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan and from 3-8 p.m.

Evelyn Christensen, 86

    ELK HORN -- Evelyn Yvonne Christensen, 86, Elk Horn, died August 18 at the Salem Lutheran Home.    Services were held Saturday, Aug. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.    Christensen is survived by her husband, Casey Christensen, of Harlan; granddaughter Amanda (Taylor) Pappas of Omaha, NE; and sister Delores Byriel of Ames.

Unique Baby Names still the trend

Deadline for fall grant program Sept. 1

    COUNTY -- The Shelby County Community Foundation reminds Shelby County nonprofits that the deadline to apply for grant funds is Wednesday, September 1.    Applications are currently being accepted online for the fall grant cycle with $42,600 available to support Shelby County nonprofit organizations and community projects.

Eyeing their retirement after 17 years in Walnut

By Molly Blanco, Reporter    WALNUT -- Larry and Betty Roberts bustled around the bakery, making pastries and chatting with customers as the sweet, warm aroma of dough enveloped the room. It was one of their last days hard at work at the bakery.    After 17 years in business, Larry and Betty will retire from The Roberts’ Bakery in Walnut.    “We have mixed emotions [about retiring],” Larry said.

First IKM-Manning bond issue informational meeting draws 100

    MANILLA – Approximately 100 IKM-Manning school patrons turned out Tuesday evening, Aug. 17 in Manilla for the first of three informational meetings regarding the school district’s proposed $19.95 million bond issue.    The bond referendum vote is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 14.      Additional informational meetings are planned for Wednesday, Aug. 25 at IKM-Manning Elementary School; and Wednesday, Sept.
