Experienced Wolves seek better start in ‘21

 MANNING (Aug. 27) -- One of the first big goals for the IKM-Manning football team this fall will be getting off to a better start. In 2019 the Wolves lost their first three games, then closed the regular season with six straight wins to make the playoffs. In 2020, they started 0-4 and finished 2-5 in a COVID-shortened regular season.

James Brace, 83

    IRWIN -- James H. Brace, 83, Irwin, died August 23 at his home.    Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Harlan.  Visitation will be at 10 a.m.

Nolan Parker, 27

    Nolan Parker, 27, died Monday, Aug. 23 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.    Visitation was held Friday, Aug. 27 at 10:30 a.m.

Arthur Larsen, 88

    AVOCA -- Arthur R. Larsen, 88, Avoca, died August 2.    He is survived by his wife, Loretta Mueller Larsen, of Walnut; son Chris of Stockton, CA; and daughter Cynthia of Sacramento, CA.

Newspaper Facebook® page sees tremendous growth

    REGIONAL – Rapid growth of the Harlan Newspapers’ Facebook® page has resulted in a short-lived posting hiatus courtesy of the big tech company as it is now requiring multiple verification processes in order to post news and photos on the site.    Josh Byers, publisher, said this week the page has grown to have approximately 4,000 page likes, making it the premiere source for local Shelby County-area news and sports.

Third vaccine dose okayed for immunocompromised

    REGIONAL -- On Thursday, August 12th the Food and Drug Administration approved a third dose of mRNA vaccine for immunocompromised people that have previously completed a two-dose series.    Studies found evidence of reduced immune response to a 2-dose series in some groups of immunocompromised people.

HCHS Kicker Leinen raising funds for childhood cancer research

    HARLAN -- Harlan Community junior Stephen Leinen, a kicker and punter for the Cyclone football team, is raising money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research.  Leinen is the son of Darrell and Shayla Leinen, Harlan.    Following in the footsteps of former Harlan Community kickers Billy Cundiff, Greg Conry, Ethan Knudson and Kyle Knudson, Leinen is fundraising for a cancer research foundation based off of his kick

Nominations for city office being accepted

By Bob Bjoin, Editor    COUNTY -- On August 23, local city clerks began accepting nomination papers for the elected positions of city mayor and city council members in communities throughout Shelby County.    For those considering candidacy within city positions this year, the deadline for filing nomination papers will be September 16 at 5 p.m.  This year’s general election is Tuesday, Nov.
