Vicki Salazar, 72

    HARLAN -- Vicki Salazar, 72, Harlan, died August 9 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.    Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville with burial in the Jacksonville Cemetery.  Visitation is Friday, Aug. 13 from 5-7 p.m.

Robert McCoy, 74

    BEDFORD -- Robert Paul McCoy, 74, Bedford, formerly of Harlan, died July 29 in Ringgold County.    Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 1 p.m.

“Home Sweet Dome” book signing Wednesday at Buck Snort

 HARLAN -- Award-winning sports writers Craig Sesker and Doug Newhoff will be in Harlan Wednesday afternoon (August 11) for a book signing as they announce the release of “Home Sweet Dome”, the most comprehensive history of the Iowa high school football playoff era ever produced. The book signing will take place at The Buck Snort Restaurant (3002 23rd Street, Harlan) from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cyclone Camp of Champions draws 130 football players

 HARLAN -- Approximately 130 Harlan Community football players in grades 7-12 attended this year’s Cyclone Camp of Champions at Merrill Field August 2-6. The high school camp, which included about 70 players, was held Monday-Friday during the morning while the middle school camp was held Monday-Thursday in the afternoon. High school practices will begin on Monday, August 9, the Lions Club intrasquad scrimmage will be Thursday, Aug.

Four area players make All-District baseball teams

 AREA -- AHSTW senior Blake Holst and three Harlan Community players - juniors Alex Monson and Joey Moser and senior Isaiah Ahrenholtz - have been named to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association’s 2021 All-District baseball teams. Holst (Class 2A) and Monson (Class 3A) are both first-team Southwest District selections while Moser and Ahrenholtz are second-team selections. Blake Holst, AHSTW, sr.

All-State baseball teams announced

 DES MOINES (Aug. 3) -- The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association announced its 2021 all-state baseball teams on Tuesday, naming three teams per class and four captains. The teams were selected during a virtual meeting with sports writers and coaches from around the state. This year’s senior captains include Blaine Harpenau of Remsen St.

Brouse, Meyers, Emgarten, Burmeister make IGCA All-District Softball teams

 AREA -- Four local softball players have been recognized as 2021 All-District selections by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. Harlan Community senior Emily Brouse was named to the Class 4A West District team, AHSTW junior Ally Meyers made the Class 2A Southwest District team and two Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton players - junior Macy Emgarten and sophomore Shay Burmeister - made the Class 1A Southwest District team.

HCHS Marching Band Camp

    HARLAN -- The HCHS Marching Band kicked off its season last week with a week-long band camp, preparing the pre-game and halftime shows for the upcoming ball games and contests.Here, Kody Bruck on trumpet and L to R -- Micah Sorensen, Quinn Mahoney, and Abram Wilwerding.    Director of Bands Bill Kearney called band camp a huge success and says the musicians are looking forward to the season.
