The HCHS girls varsity tennis team started their Saturday morning with a 5-2 victory over the Atlantic Trojans, but ended the day by dropping their match to Kuemper Catholic 5-0.
“We started out with an exciting match against Atlantic for our first round regional play,” said HCHS Head Tennis Coach Katie Arentson. “Our confidence and grit was tested in the next sets as our opponents really put up a good fight overall.”
Senior Raegen Wicks continued her hot streak Thursday night with her third straight hat trick as the HCHS girls varsity soccer team beat the Nodaway Valley Wolverines 4-1 for their seventh win in a row.
HARLAN — Myrtue Medical Center invitied area children to go “Fishing for Fun” on Monday, May 9 at Nishna Bend Recreation Area. Children under 12 were able to attend the event with an adult. A boxed meal was provided for all participants and prizes were awarded.
COUNTY — Iowa Secretary of State Paul D. Pate visited with members of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry last Thursday to introduce area businesses to a statewide coalition to end human trafficking in Iowa. Iowa businesses are encouraged to visit IBAT.iowa.gov.
The HCHS boys varsity golf team competed at the 3A Class Sectional Golf meet at Majestic Hills Golf Course in Denison on Wednesday and took home sixth place.
“I am happy with our overall performance today,” said HCHS Head Golf Coach Chad Swanson. “The back nine played pretty difficult today and that shows on our cards.”
Swanson acknowledged players on this roster that stood out throughout the day and performed strong.
On Monday morning, the HCHS boys varsity golf team placed sixth out of 11 schools that competed in the Hawkeye Ten Tournament.
“The team scoring was very tight with only 16 strokes separating the top six teams,” said HCHS Head Golf Coach Chad Swanson.
Swanson was proud of his boys efforts even in tough weather conditions.
It was hot and humid at Merrill Field for senior night, but the HCHS girls varsity soccer team came out dominant against the AHSTW Vikings, winning 9-0. Senior Raegen Wicks had three goals on the night, while freshman Ivy Stephens had two.
Locked in a 1-1 tied at halftime Tuesday night, the HCHS boys varsity soccer team took over in the second half and beat the AHSTW Vikings 4-2.
“We just said you guys are doing a good job,” said HCHS Head Soccer Coach Dave Voge. “Avoca’s a tough team. They have a lot of really good athletes on the team. They’ve got some size to them.”
It was hot and humid at Merrill Field, but that didn’t stop the HCHS girls varsity soccer team from playing strong against the Logan-Magnolia Panthers. They were victorious 4-2. Senior Raegen Wicks had three goals for the Cyclones.
