Monson shuts down Tigers to help Cyclones advance

Senior Alex Monson got the ball for the HCHS varsity baseball team Friday night to begin its playoff run against the Carroll Tigers and was dominant, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out eight batters.
Despite beating the Tigers 16-2 on June 28, this time the Cyclones won 2-0.

Harlan swim team set for conference meet

Saturday in Audubon, the Harlan swim team will be competing in a conference meet after eight previous swim meets starting back on June 8.
“The thing I’m most excited about for this one would definitely be the amount of kids going,” said Harlan Swim Team Head Coach Levi Culp. “When I was in high school and even last season, I only had about 30 kids going to the conference meet and this year I have about 48.”

Portsmouth earns rescue certification

 PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth Fire and Rescue recently earned state certification for the rescue department. Fire Chief Mike Leinen said the process was time consuming. “The first step was for the department to vote on it.

Lucke will lead Chevron Renewable Energy Group

 AMES —  Chevron Corp. recently completed its purchase of Renewable Energy Group, (REG) a biodiesel and renewable diesel company based in Ames. The Ames location will serve as Chevron’s renewable fuel headquarters, and Kevin Lucke of Harlan has been named president of Chevron Renewable Energy Group.  Lucke said with the purchase comes ambitious plans for growth.

Iowa Gallivant back on the T-Bone Trail

    COUNTY — The 2021 T-Bone Trail was one of the biggest and most entertaining promotions that Western Iowa has ever seen, so it’s  Shelby County and Western Iowa Tourism Region’s absolute pleasure to do it again in 2022. There’s plenty of steak in this region to make this year’s expedition through this region even more memorable. Cyclones advance to next round of playoffs

Wednesday night, the HCHS varsity softball team took on the OABCIG Falcons in their first playoff game of the season and beat them via the mercy rule, 11-1 in five innings. Junior Jenna Gessert got the ball for the Cyclones and struck out one batter, while allowing one run on five hits.

Cyclones finish regular season with walk-off victory

A night after their game was cancelled due to bad weather against the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs, the HCHS varsity baseball team came home Wednesday night to defeat the Council Bluffs Lincoln Lynx 2-1. The first five innings of the game were scoreless for both sides.

Red Sox win over Storm Chasers in Westphalia

It was a hot day in Westphalia, but that didn’t stop hundreds of people from coming out to watch the Old Timers baseball game between the Westphalia Red Sox and the Omaha Storm Chasers. The Red Sox won 9-3 in seven innings played.
Former Major League pitcher Curt Kaufman who played for the California Angels and the New York Yankees during the early 80s got the ball to start the game for the Red Sox.

Cyclones hand Eagles its third loss

The HCHS varsity baseball team (21-7) took on the Underwood Eagles (20-2) at home on Friday and shut them down, 6-1.
Senior Alex Monson got the ball to start the game for the Cyclones. He pitched just one inning and gave up a run. Freshman Weston Reisz came in for the final six innings of the game, not allowing a run.

Gessert dominates in game one; Cyclones drop game two in extras

Junior Jenna Gessert got the ball to start game one of a doubleheader against the Clarinda Cardinals Thursday. She struck out seven batters and gave up six hits. The offense supported her with a few runs, and it was all she needed as the Cyclones won, 2-1.
“Jenna threw well,” said HCHS Head Softball Coach Toshia Kasperbauer. “She had them out on their front foot, so they were not able to get the line drives.”
