HMU trustees approve contract for new raw water system improvements

HARLAN — The Harlan Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees met Thursday, June 8 to discuss and approve several plans and policies.The trustees approved the contract for the new raw water system improvements. They plan to install four new wells with new piping, electrical and controls. McCarthy Trenching out of Avoca will be the contractor for the project. Construction is expected to start around the middle of July.

Panama Parish Picnic will be held this weekend

PANAMA ­— The annual Panama picnic is being held on June 10 and 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. This event has been held for the past several years on Friday and Saturday nights in June on Father’s Day weekend. It is a great way for people to get together and socialize while also serving as a major fundraiser for St. Mary’s Parish.New for this year, there will be steak sandwiches, tater tots, funnel cakes and root beer floats.

Harlan teens injured in collision on Blackhawk Lake

SAC COUNTY — Two Harlan teenagers sustained injuries during a collision between a personal watercraft (PWC) and a pontoon around 3:17 p.m. Sunday, June 11. According to a report issued by the Iowa DNR, the accident occurred on Black Hawk Lake near Lake View. The report stated the pontoon was operated by Charles Lierman, 75, of Ankeny, and was traveling an estimated 15 miles per hour.

Shelby County Extension and Outreach office welcomes summer interns

SHELBY COUNTY — The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Office of Shelby County welcomes two new interns for the summer.Julia Biehl is from Belleville, Illinois, and attends Iowa State, where she studies agricultural communication. She will be heading into her sophomore year this fall.

Cyclones drop 10th consecutive game

Senior Cyclone Ellie Ineson had two base hits and drove in two runs Thursday night at home against Kuemper Catholic, but it wasn’t enough as the Knights won 8-4 and handed the Cyclones their 10th loss in a row and 18th on the season.
Jenna Gessert started the night in the circle for the Cyclones against Ally Sommerfield. Both girls pitched seven innings.

Livia “Suzette” Bates-Leal

Livia “Suzette” Bates-Leal was born to Winston and Jessie (Caldwell) Bates on June 3, 1963 Springfield, MO. She had two siblings, Winston Jr. Bates and Greg Bates.After moving to Harlan in 1980, she met and married Jose Leal. She worked as a waitress for several years before becoming employed by West Central Development Corporations Head Start program.

Mass of Christian Burial for James “Doc” Musich, 75, of Bedford was held Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 11 AM at Cummings Family Funeral Home.  Visitation was at the funeral home Friday, June 2, 2023 from 3-7 PM with family present from 5-7 PM.  Interment  at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.  Memorials may be directed towards the family to be established in Doc’s honor.
