Cyclones drop regular season finale

The HCHS varsity baseball team concluded the regular season Wednesday night against the Council Bluffs Lincoln Lynx, losing 3-1.
Junior Franz Reisz took the mound for the Cyclones and pitched six innings, struck out six batters, gave up three runs on six hits on 107 pitches.

Cyclones open playoffs against Trojans at home

Friday night, the HCHS Cyclones baseball team will begin their postseason journey at home against the Atlantic Trojans.
“I think the guys are very anxious,” said Cyclones Head Coach Heath Stein. “We like our draw and we’re going to go in and compete as best we can.”
With Atlantic being a rival school, Stein hopes to see a large crowd in attendance.

Spartans punch ticket to next round with 4-2 win

Spartan eighth grader Riley Miller was the star of the game pitching seven innings, striking out nine batters, and allowing just two runs in a 4-2 victory over the Audubon Wheelers.
Miller also knocked in two runs at the plate, including one in the bottom of the 3rd inning and one in the bottom of the 5th.

Cyclones give up five runs in 9th inning

In the top of the 9th inning with no outs, Senior Hawkeye Mason King launched a 3-run home run over the left field fence making it a 6-3 game en route to a 8-3 victory for the Hawkeyes, their 21st of the season.
For King, it was his second home run of the game as he hit one out in the top of the 5th with his team trailing 3-2.

Harlan native wins national graphic design awards

 HARLAN — Harlan native Mitchell Rueschenberg recently won three national awards for his work on graphic designs for the Iowa State University men’s basketball team. He placed both first and fifth best in the nation and placed fifth in the winter game day graphics section.“I was pretty excited for him,” Ryan Workman, Associate Director for Athletics Communication, said.

Community Chest now accepting applications for funding

SHELBY COUNTY -- Non-profit agencies operating within Shelby County will have until the end of August to complete applications for funding from Shelby County Community Chest (SCCC).

Non-county residents will now pay convenience fee for driver’s license

SHELBY COUNTY — Effective July 1, 2023, per an Iowa Code change, the Shelby County Driver’s License Station will begin charging a $10 convenience fee for issuance of a driver’s license or identification card to anyone who is not a resident of Shelby County unless the resident pays property taxes here. On May 4, 2023, the Governor signed House File 718 into law.  This bill allows counties that issue driver’s licenses to charge a $10 convenience

Myrtue Medical Center’s will open temporary ER entrance during renovation and expansion

HARLAN — As a reminder, starting on July 6, 2023, at 8 a.m. the Hospital’s Emergency Room entrance along Garfield Ave. will close to allow for an estimated 13-month expansion and renovation of the current emergency room. A temporary emergency entrance will be located just to the west of the existing ER, still on Garfield Avenue at the existing Hospital Visitor Entrance.

Vikings advance to next round; Wolves eliminated

In the bottom of the 2nd inning with one out and her team trailing by one, Junior Viking Graycen Partlow dumped a ball into right field clearing the bases and making it a 3-1 game en route to an eventual 9-2 Vikings victory.
Partlow stepped up again in the bottom of the 3rd inning when she connected at the plate for a two out, 2-run double with the bases loaded, putting her team up 7-1.
