State registry names 16 sex offenders residing in Shelby County

 SHELBY COUNTY — There are currently 16 registered sex offenders residing in Shelby County, according to information provided by Iowa’s sex offender registry. There are currently two registrants residing in the City of Shelby; two in Portsmouth; one in Westphalia; one in Kimballton; and one in Elk Horn.

Summit Carbon Solutions files petition with Iowa Utility Board for pipeline permit

SHELBY COUNTY — Summit Carbon Solutions has filed a petition with the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) for a pipeline permit to construct, operate, and maintain a liquefied carbon dioxide pipeline in Shelby County. According to Summit Carbon Solutions, the proposed pipeline would connect over 30 ethanol plants in a five-state region, including Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Agronomist reports Shelby County crops look good despite dry weather

 SHELBY COUNTY — Crop reports show that the crops are looking good in Shelby County despite receiving significantly less water than in years prior, said Mike Witt, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Agronomist.Witt said the crops were planted at a good time, and there were not too many slowdowns in the planting process due to the lack of rain.Although, the county has seen more rainfall recently, Shelby County is still in a D1 or D2 d

Fahn excited for future of Spartan sports

Halfway done with high school, incoming Exira-EHK Junior Harlee Fahn hopes to build off an already stellar career.
Fahn plays softball, basketball, volleyball and runs track and field. Most recently, softball ended with her taking home honorable mention in the Rolling Valley All Conference list.
“It was great,” Fahn said. “That was my first time ever being an honorable mention, so it was just great to accomplish that.”

Shelby County Fair float stirs up controversy

 SHELBY COUNTY — Two Harlan natives, siblings Kathy Byrnes and Brian Byrnes, are expressing their outrage regarding a float in the Shelby County Fair parade. The float displayed a coffin with a Biden/Harris sign crossed out, and a Trump sign on the tractor pulling it.

Stangl & McGinn recognized in softball

IKM-Manning’s Anna Stangl and Alikxa McGinn were recently awarded for their efforts in softball. Stangl made 2nd Team in All Conference and McGinn received honorable mention.
“When I saw that I did, I was in shock and I was like, oh my gosh, that’s amazing,” McGinn said. “I know that I had a pretty good year, maybe not as a team, but we all came together and definitely couldn’t have done it without them.”

Three Vikings take home awards

Juniors Graycen Partlow and Rylie Knop and Freshman Halle Goodman recently made the Western Iowa All Conference list for their efforts in softball. Partlow made 1st Team, while Knop and Goodman made 2nd Team.
“It was really great,” Partlow said. “It came out and it was just good to see that my hard work had paid off and that I was able to get the job done. It’s really good to see and it made me feel good.”

Salem Lutheran Homes and Rehabilitation now offers at-home physical therapy

ELK HORN — The Salem Lutheran Homes and Rehabilitation Center now offers at-home physical therapy to provide easier access to those who may have trouble getting into the office. This is a new service addition for three different locations, Elk Horn, Red Oak and Villisca.Therapists will bring the necessary equipment to the home. Using the in-home services eliminates the need to schedule transportation to an outpatient clinic.
