City crews uncover 9th St. sinkhole; searching for cause

    HARLAN -- Harlan city crews Wednesday were working to identify the cause of a sinkhole under the street along 9th St. near the Norman D. Stamp Aquatic Center.    A crack developed in the street, and upon investigation, a long area was discovered where the dirt had washed away, but the underground pipe wasn’t leaking and was intact.    Stayed tuned for further developments. In the meantime, the road was closed to through traffic.

3A District baseball games in Harlan postponed

   HARLAN -- The Class 3A, District 15 baseball games for tonight (Friday, July 13) at Jim Goeser Field in Harlan have been postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Saturday, July 14.
   Denison-Schleswig vs. Atlantic will now start at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, followed by Harlan Community vs. Carroll at approximately 6:00 p.m.

Twelve to vie for Shelby County Fair Queen honors

    COUNTY -- Twelve young women are in the running to be crowned Shelby County Fair Queen this week.    Coronation will take place Thursday evening, July 12 in the show ring at the fairgrounds at 8 p.m.

Cake decorating new to Fair

COUNTY -- The Shelby County Fair has added a cake decorating contest to the long list of food-related contests for 4-H students.    The contest was first introduced through a cake decorating workshop with Beth Klein, a baker at HyVee.    Mallory Mulligan is in 9th grade and has been a part of 4-H since 3rd grade.    “I am involved in lots of static exhibits; clothing, fashion show, Best of Iowa, pie baking, Share the Fun, and lots of rabbits,”

Special election in Shelby to fill vacant council seats

City questions HMU regarding sewer money
