HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

ARLAN -- The Iowa Community Kitchen in Harlan is going into its fifth year anniversary.    The Iowa community kitchen serves a freewill donation meal every Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church.    “We’re there for the people who need a well balanced meal and we’re also there for socialization and fellowship, we bring the community together,” Vicki Bever said.    The kitchen was founded in Harlan by Bever.

Norse Horse new Elk Horn tavern

  ELK HORN -- Elk Horn is getting a new restaurant, The Norse Horse Tavern. Diane and Dave Thompson own the restaurant but their son-in-law, Arron Dixon, will operate it. Dixon hopes to have it open within the next month, but it depends on the remodeling.    Once opened, the tavern will have 12 taps with beer; one with root beer or cream soda.

Community Chest accepting applications for funding

    COUNTY -- Non-profit agencies within Shelby County will have until the end of August to complete applications for funding from Shelby County Community Chest. Funds from SCCC are made possible by the generosity of local donors to the SCCC annual fund drive which will be taking place this fall.    Shelby County Community Chest accumulates and then disburses the funds from this campaign to local non-profits for a single year.

    HARLAN -- Dave Miller has lived in Harlan almost his whole life and believes Harlan is one of the best places to live.    Miller was born here in 1949. As a child he remembers doing all the childhood things in Harlan.

Army service teaches hard work, dedication

    DEFIANCE -- Daniel Fuhs’ experiences in the Army taught him about hard work and dedication while traveling the world.    For 23 years, Fuhs traveled around the world with the Army. He enlisted when he was just a few years into college. 

ISU Extension committee to nominate council candidates

    HARLAN -- Four Shelby County residents have been appointed to the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach council nominating committee, Julie Klein council chairperson announced. The committee is charged with nominating candidates for the five vacancies on the council before Aug.

  HARLAN -- Residents all around Harlan have been finding painted rocks scattered around the town. On the back, the rock directs you to a Facebook page, the Harlan Cyclone Rocks.    Harlan Cyclone Rocks was started by Charlaye James.

MMC hires architectural firm to conduct master facility plan

    HARLAN -- Myrtue Medical Center Board of Trustees approved the recommendation to hire the architecture and engineering firm, Shive-Hattery (West Des Moines), as the architect to conduct a master facility plan at MMC. The master facility plan fees are estimated at $35,000 to $40,000.

    HARLAN -- The Harlan City Council is moving forward with improvements at J.J.

HCS’s Hagemeier Excellence in Education runner-up

    DES MOINES -- Lisa Hagemeier, a 6th grade communications and high school Spanish teacher and Speech Coach in the Harlan Community School District, is a 2018 Excellence in Education Award Runner-up.    The award is sponsored by the Iowa State Education Association (ISEA).

Photography a passion for Shannon

     IRWIN -- Photography has been a part of Noreen Shannon's life for more than 40 years.    Through getting married to Rodney Shannon, having two kids, Scott and Erica, and battling pancreatic and breast cancer, her hobby for photography has sustained.    Shannon bought her first nice camera, a cannon 35 mm, in the 80s and wanted to learn how operate it and take pleasing pictures. 

HCS supt.’s office sees 32.54 percent average wage increase over four years

    HARLAN -- At July’s Harlan Community Schools Board of Education board retreat workshop, HCS Superintendent of Schools Justin Wagner touted the district’s financial solvency and his ability to say “no” to many funding requests in order to keep the district financially viable.    While the district has lost nearly $1 million in state revenue through declining enrollment (163.5 students since 2010), the district also has absorbed 18 positions

Wagner: HCSD pays staff in upper echelons while maintaining low tax levy

    “There are many different groups of comparability within the HCSD when considering pay. So anchoring to a common set of goals when making compensation decisions is important. Those goals for the HCSD are the board axioms. One of those axioms is ‘Keep pay in the upper echelons of Schools of Comparable Size’.

GRASSLEY AT CONDUCTIX- WAMPFLER TUESDAY

    HARLAN -- Senator Chuck Grassley visited employees at Conductix-Wampfler on Tuesday, Aug. 7. Following a tour of the facilities, Grassley held a question and answer conversation with the employees.  Grassley answered questions related to agriculture, trade, social security and health care.
