HARLAN -- The hot temperatures in early June meant busy days at the Norman D. Stamp Aquatic Center in Harlan. Although it has been rainy the past few weeks, area kids still got some time in at the pool. 

Harlan musician Fields four-time inductee in Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame

    HARLAN – A long-time Harlan musician will be inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in September for the fourth time.    Bob Fields already has been honored as a member of The Great Imposters (2007), The Impacts (2009) and Larry Ray and the Redtops (2016), and now will be recognized this fall when El Riada’s is inducted into the Hall of Fame during ceremonies September 1-2.    Festivities for the 2018 Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fa

Firework donations needed for next year

    HARLAN -- Every year, the fireworks show attracts hundreds to the J.J. Jensen ball fields. This show would not be possible without the help of the Harlan American Legion Post #150 and the community members' donations.    For more than 30 years the American Legion has been fundraising for the fireworks display.

Farmers Market now open for the season

   HARLAN -- If you are looking for fresh, direct from the source produce, the farmer’s market is the place for you.    A variety of merchants now are selling fresh produce in the northwest corner of the Shopko parking lot from 8:30 a.m.-noon.    It will take place every Saturday through October, and every Wednesday starting July 11 from 3:30-6 p.m. through September.    The farmer’s market has been going on for around 30 years. 

Number of area sex offenders increases to 38

    REGIONAL – The number of registered sex offenders that call the greater Shelby County area their home has increased in the past six months, according to Iowa’s state sex offender registry.    Shelby County and areas surrounding the county have 38 registered sex offenders as of this month, as opposed to December, 2017 when there were 31 registered sex offenders listed in the area and 26 a year ago.  Some offenders are new to the area while

Bauer’s Shoes

    HARLAN -- Bauer’s Shoes was one of eight businesses in downtown Harlan to receive grant money for facade work.    The building received a new paint job and all new windows and doors.    Old bricks were replaced around the sides of the building and eventually a new awning will be installed replacing the old one on the west side of the building.    Pictured L to R: Carol Chadwick and Keith Bauer.

For this shot he used his 11-year-old DSLR w/45 year old Vivitar 28mm manual focus lens -- focused to infinity, ISO 200, f/16, 1/5th second shutter. Videos - storm battles Harlan and Shelby County at 10:30 am

The Harlan Newspaper scanner was chattering busily on Thurs., June 28 at 10:30 am with a giant red blob of storms heading directly for Shelby County.
Rainfall estimated at .85 to 1”, plus hail...wind speeds up to 70-mph from the NW.
Reports throughout the County of downed power lines and tree limbs in roadways were abundant on the scanner.

AMERICAN GIRL

HARLAN -- Karrisa Mickelson, an 11-year-old attending Harlan Community Intermediate School, decided to save money and donate an American Girl doll to a stranger, but not a complete stranger. Daisy Anguiano Miranda, an 11-year-old Nebraskan, has been fighting a rare bone cancer called Ewing's Sarcoma since she was eight.During one of Mickelson's classes, her teacher showed the students a video about Daisy on her birthday.

City of Harlan audit released

HARLAN -- Auditor of State Mary Mosiman this week released an audit report on the City of Harlan.    The City’s receipts totaled $7,955,740 for the year ended June 30, 2017.

Pedersen resigns from Harlan City Council

HARLAN – Long-time Harlan City Councilman David H. Pedersen has announced his resignation from the council effective July 1.    Pedersen has served on the council for 12½ years, and said in a resignation letter to the city that it’s been a pleasure to work for the community.

HARLAN -- After a long season that started in early April, kids enjoyed their last t-ball games of the season at J.J. Jensen Park in Harlan.

Old Mill remains burned last week

HARLAN -- On Wed., June 20, the Harlan Fire Department control burned what remained of the old mill after it was torn down the Friday before.    Bobby Fox, with Fox Construction, will return to remove the remaining rubble once the fire is completely out and the mill’s remains reduced to ashes.    The mill dated back to the late 1800s when it was used as a flour and then oats mill. 

Cox attorney says client denies charges

    HARLAN -- Former Harlan City Administrator Terry Cox disagrees with the charges filed against him, plans to plead not guilty to all charges, and is looking forward to clearing his name at trial.    Complaints filed in Shelby County District Court last Friday charged Cox with Theft First Degree, Felonious Misconduct in Office and Tampering with Records.  He turned himself in to the Shelby County Jail Friday, June 15 after an arrest warrant

Shanahan Duty granted work release

    STATE – Dixie Shanahan Duty, 50, Defiance, convicted of second-degree murder in 2004 in the shooting death of her husband, Scott Shanahan, has been granted work release by the Iowa Board of Parole.    The board made the decision on June 5, but hasn’t announced a date when the work release will be effective.    Duty has been an inmate at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville, roughly 20 miles east of Des Moines, since

HOLLYWOOD, CA – They only had about 24 hours notice, and overall the entire evening was quite unpredictable; nevertheless, it was a night nobody involved will ever forget.  The Los Angeles Times called it the Best Prince Show Ever back in 2014, and Harlan native Dylan Greer played a big part in bringing that concert to life.
