LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES

Harlan’s Niall Mahoney recently has led the construction of eight Little Free Libraries, placed in parks throughout Harlan, as part of his Eagle Scout project.    Inside each box are books that interested readers can take, or others can put their own books inside for others to read.    Funded by the Harlan Lions Club as a legacy project and endorsed by the Harlan Community Library, the libraries were installed Friday, Aug.

    TENNANT -- Jim Brantner, the mayor of Tennant, has not always resided there.  Previously he lived in Denver, CO with his wife, Betty, and their three sons for 16 years before moving to Tennant in 2006.    Betty has brothers and sisters who live in the Council Bluffs area and Brantner grew up in the Kansas City area and still has family in the region.

Cox trial continued; now set for October 23

    HARLAN -- The trial of former Harlan City Administrator Terry Cox on charges of first-degree theft, felonious misconduct in office and tampering with records has been continued.    Shelby County court records indicate that the pre-trial conference is now scheduled for October 1, 2018, and jury trial is scheduled for October 23 at 9:30 a.m.

Earling’s Book loves bowling

    EARLING -- Bernice Book, 93, has been bowling for around 68 years.    Book was born in Panama but moved to Earling after getting married.

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Municipal Utilities reports this week that the water plan is on a record-setting pace.    HMU is asking customers to implement voluntary water conservation over the next few days.  Officials said there is no compromise to quality, but HMU needs customers to cut back on water consumption a little to allow the clear wells and water towers to replenish.
