Flooding rains drench Shelby County

         The area saw as much as 4-6 of rain Tuesday morning in some spots, and more storms rolled through Tuesday night and Wednesday night into Thursday morning bringing the week’s totals to well above seven inches in areas.

Mildred Johnson, 97

    AVOCA -- Mildred F. Johnson, 97, Avoca, died Friday, June 15 in Avoca.    Services will be held Tuesday, June 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Altamont Baptist Church in rural Shelby County with burial in the Cuppy’s Grove Cemetery in rural Shelby County.    Family will greet friends Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church.    Johnson is survived by daughter-in-law Marlene K.

Former city administrator Cox charged

    HARLAN – Former Harlan City Administrator Terry Lynn Cox, 67, has been charged in Shelby County District Court with Theft First Degree, Felonious Misconduct in Office and Tampering with Records.    Cox, 1314 Southridge Drive, Harlan, was booked into the Shelby County Jail on Friday, June 15, and then later released on $5,000 bond.    If convicted of the charges against him, Cox faces a maximum sentence of 17 years in jail, with additional

Earth vs. wind, wind wins

    HARLAN -- On Thursday, June 14, a front came through in the morning with high winds that broke off a large branch from one of Patty Allen's trees at 1604 West Park St.    Allen said she heard a screeching sound after a large gust of wind and when she looked over the branch was down.

 HARLAN -- The Brick Wall Gallery was one of eight businesses in downtown Harlan to receive grant money for facade work.    The Gallery received a new paint job and new glass in the windows.

ELK HORN LIBRARY EXPANDING

    ELK HORN -- The Elk Horn library is expanding, with construction beginning last week on a 900 square foot addition.    Planning for this addition started last fall. The addition will connect to the library’s existing children’s area and will add space that can be used by patrons of all ages for meetings and programming.

Annual Harlan flight breakfast Sunday

    HARLAN -- This Father’s Day, the Harlan Aviation 8-ball Club is hosting the 73rd annual Flight Breakfast at the airport.    From 7:30-11 a.m. pancakes, eggs, and bacon, and drinks such as coffee, juice and milk will be offered.

Kids learn about farm safety

    HARLAN -- The annual Myrtue Medical Center/Progressive Agricultural Safety Day for kids 8-13 years was held Friday, June 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kids participated in a variety of activities to learn safety techniques for topics such as animals, electrical, food, tractors, and lawn mower safety.  See more photos on page 2A today.   

Hansen House Project Gains Steam

HARLAN -- Harlan’s newest health facility is taking shape in north Harlan, a memory care unit to serve the Shelby County community called the Hansen House.  The building’s construction culminates two years of discussions between Harlan and developer Bill McCarty.  The city is providing a $43,500 forgivable loan in exchange for the creation of 14.5 full time-equivalent jobs to be in place by June 1, 2019, as well as a one-time development subsi

Ouren Real Estate and Ouren Title

    HARLAN -- Ouren Real Estate and Ouren Title was one of eight businesses in downtown Harlan to receive grant money for facade work. The Ouren building had new windows and doors installed, new caulking to fill in new cracks and replace old caulk, and new paint on the area around the Ouren sign on the building.    Below the upper windows, a slant was added to the grey ledge to prevent snow from building up.
