Burmeister receives Sportsmanship Award

 DES MOINES -- Representing the community of Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton, Lisa Burmeister received the Iowa Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award at the Girls State Basketball Tournament on February 28. A fan from each school participating in the tournament was presented a sportsmanship award prior to the team’s first-round game.

Gary Christiansen, 80

    HARLAN -- Services for Gary Hans Christiansen, 80, Harlan, who died January 10, will be held Saturday, March 24 at 11 a.m.

Charles Schachterle, 90

    AVOCA -- Charles P. Schachterle, 90, Avoca, formerly of Des Moines, died Thursday, March 15 at Avoca Specialty Care.    Services were held Monday, March 19 at 11 a.m.

Rick Flynn, 56

    SHELBY -- Rick Lee Flynn, 56, Shelby, died March 15 at Methodist Hospital.    Services are pending at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.    Flynn is survived by his mother, Glenyce Jean (Obrecht) Wendelin of Harlan; father Richard (Bonnie) Flynn of Perry Park, KY; brother Robb (Lauren) Flynn of Katy, TX; and stepbrothers Rick (Shelley) Turner of Nabb, IN and Rob (Holly) Turner of La Grange, KY. 

Mock Trial Teams Qualify for State

HARLAN – Two Harlan Community High School mock trial teams have qualified for state competition following top honors at the regional event held at Iowa Western Community College in Council Buffs March 7.    Harlan Community’s Red and Black teams finished first and second at regionals, and have qualified for the State Mock Trial Competition in Des Moines March 26-27.

Shelby County has clean audit; okays proposed budget

    HARLAN – Shelby County is in a good financial position heading forward and had no instances of non-compliance or internal control deficiencies, according to an audit report presented last week by Gronewold, Bell, Kyhnn & Co., PC.    Auditor Chris Nelson told the Shelby County Board of Supervisors Tuesday, March 13 that the county has a clean audit for the year ended June 30, 2017. 

Swanson honored with all-state speech honors

    HARLAN -- A Harlan Community High School junior has been honored with all-state honors, and he will perform later this month at the Iowa High School Speech Association’s All-State Festival in Cedar Falls.    Jayden Swanson was nominated for the all-state festival in the category of Expository Address.  He was nominated by at least two of the three judges who evaluated his performance at the state level speech competition held in early Marc

Work begins soon on Harlan Plaza development

    HARLAN – Shelby County residents will soon see some development work at the Harlan Plaza area in south Harlan as final plans have been approved and bids set to be let in early April on initial dirt and road work.    Within a year the south corridor into town will see the likes of the Buck Snort Restaurant and a new, larger Bomgaars facility, as well as a proposed new dental office located in the Harlan Plaza near the Settle Inn motel.    T

NATIONAL PI (3.14) DAY!

HARLAN -- Every year for about 10 years, HCHS Talented and Gifted Instructor Kim Zaccone has had her math classes celebrate Pi Day,  March 14.  She has contests to see how many digits (places) of pi the students can memorize.        Remarkably, this year, students set an incredible record, said Zaccone.  Three students memorized more than 100 digits of pi (3.14) each.   

Exira-EHK School Board okays sale of GO bonds

    ELK HORN -- The Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton School Board has approved the sale of not to exceed $3.9 million in general obligation bonds, to be used for capital improvements at school buildings in Elk Horn and Exira.    Bids were set to be opened yesterday, Monday, March 19, and were expected to be considered by the board for action at the meeting of the board Monday.    The dist
