Cyclones place second to Atlantic in Carstens Invite

 HARLAN (April 10) -- If the Drake Relays started tomorrow, the Harlan Community boys track team would have four events qualified for the 109th running of America’s Athletic Classic April 26-28. Nine days prior to this year’s qualifying deadline for Drake, the Cyclones improved their standing in two of those events Tuesday night and placed second as a team in the Ken Carstens Cyclone Invitational held at Merrill Field. Atlantic led the 15-team

HCHS dominates singles play in 6-3 win over Titans

 HARLAN (April 10) -- Six Harlan Community tennis players claimed at least one victory on Tuesday as the Cyclone boys defeated Lewis Central 6-3 to improve their record to 2-1. The dual outcome was already decided after singles play as HCHS won five out of six matches in convincing fashion.

Cyclone boys golfers start 2-0

 HARLAN (April 10) -- The Harlan Community boys golf team improved to 2-0 on the season here Tuesday with a five-stroke dual win over Lewis Central, 182 to 187, at the Harlan Golf and Country Club. Individual results were not available.

Tri-Center blanks HCHS girls 6-0

 HARLAN (April 9) -- The Harlan Community girls soccer team dropped to 0-2 here Monday night following a 6-0 non-conference loss to Tri-Center at Merrill Field. Tri-Center (3-0) showcased good passing and ball-control skills on their attacks and built a 4-0 halftime lead. Paige Skow scored two first-half goals and Tillie Heim also finished with a pair of goals for the Trojans, who outshot the Cyclones 33-2 overall and 21-0 on goal.

Cyclone girls place second at Earlham track meet

 EARLHAM (April 10) -- The Harlan Community girls track team placed 22 times in 17 events and scored 124 points on Tuesday, capturing second place out of 14 schools at the Earlham Co-Ed Relays. The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton girls finished 12th with four points and the Spartan boys came in 10th with 24 points. The Cyclone girls won three events, starting with a season-best time of 1:57.8 by the sprint medley quartet of Cassidy Riley, Alyssa Sot

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (April 10) -- In four-plus years as Harlan Community’s girls golf coach, Willie Baughman cannot recall the Cyclones carding a nine-hole dual score below the 200 mark. Until Tuesday, that is. Led by sub-50 rounds by seniors Lexie Holloway and Whitney Warner, HCHS shot a 199 at Fox Run Golf Club in Council Bluffs and beat Lewis Central by 31 strokes (199-230) to improve to 2-0 on the season. Holloway claimed top medalist honors f

Mildred Reinig, 94

    HARLAN -- Mildred Reinig, 94, Harlan, died at her home Sunday, April 15.    Services are pending at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.    Reinig is survived by her husband, Tony Reinig; children Dolores (Bob) Gaeta, Rose Ann (John) Cannella, Mary (Doug) Baker, Judy (Leo) Hensley, Susan (Chuck) Field, Joan (Tom) Ouren and Allan (Jackie) Reinig; 21 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
 

Richard Sciranko, Sr., 78

    HARLAN -- Richard “Dick” Sciranko, Sr., 78, Harlan, died April 13 at his home.    Services were held Monday, April 16 at 1 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Harlan with burial in the Jacksonville Cemetery at Jacksonville.  A visitation and luncheon were held Monday from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Gale Steinhoff, 86

    HARLAN -- Gale Steinhoff, 86, Harlan, died April 12 in Manilla.    A private inurnment will be held with burial at the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla.    Steinhoff is survived by his wife, LaJean Mae (Holmes) Steinhoff of Harlan; daughter Connie (Darwin) Campbell of Harlan; son Rickey Steinhoff of Manilla; sister Leah Shearon of Sioux City; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.    Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan is in charge
