Boys Soccer: West Central Valley edges HCHS

 STUART (May 10) -- Harlan Community suffered its sixth one-goal loss of the season in boys soccer Monday night, falling 3-2 at West Central Valley as the host Wildcats scored twice in the final 16 minutes. HCHS led 2-1 until the end of the 64th minute, when it was called for a foul in the box that led to Kiefer Wallace’s game-tying penalty kick.

Boys Soccer: AHSTW falls to No. 6 Falcons

 AVOCA (May 11) -- An exceptional performance from St. Albert junior Gavin Tarbox helped hand the AHSTW boys soccer team a heavy defeat on Tuesday night as the sixth-ranked Falcons prevailed 8-2 in Avoca. The Vikings dropped to 4-6 on the season. It was a start that they would want to forget as the Falcons netted three goals in the opening 10 minutes.

Cheek nabs fourth-place medal as Cyclone girls seventh at H-10 meet

 ATLANTIC (May 10) -- Jocelyn Cheek’s fourth-place medalist round of 86 helped Harlan Community notch its best 18-hole score of the year on Monday as the Cyclones posted a 412 to finish seventh at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Girls Golf Tournament. This year’s meet was held on Atlantic’s 18-hole Nishna Hills Golf Course. Creston, led by individual champion Rylie Driskell’s round of 80, won the team title by a 370-382 margin over Atlantic.

Cyclones’ Gubbels earns second team all-conference plaudits

 SHENANDOAH (May 10) -- Harlan Community’s Jace Gubbels earned second team all-conference honors by placing 11th at Monday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference Boys Golf Tournament at the 18-hole Shenandoah Golf Course. Gubbels led the Cyclones to an eighth-place team finish, carding 43 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine for an 82.

Knudson scores HCHS girls' lone point at H-10 Tennis

 SHENANDOAH (May 10) -- Josie Knudson placed eighth in the number one singles bracket and the doubles team of Grace Coenen and Erica Rust also picked up a victory in No. 2 doubles as the Harlan Community girls tennis team competed at Monday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference Tournament in Shenandoah. Knudson started the day with an 8-5 win over Libby Ehlers of Shenandoah before losing her next three matches by scores of 2-8, 5-8 and 1-8.

Cyclone boys close dual tennis season with win

 HARLAN (May 10) -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team finished the regular season with a 9-0 sweep of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson here Monday, wrapping up dual play with an overall record of 3-9. Brock Bruns, Mitchell Rueschenberg and Keyton Francis all won 10-0 decisions in singles play, as did the doubles team of Bruns and Rueschenberg. Bruns/Rueschenberg team places second at H-10 Tennis

 DENISON -- Harlan Community seniors Brock Bruns and Mitchell Rueschenberg combined to place second in the number one doubles bracket and earned all seven Cyclone team points at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Boys Tennis Tournament held May 4 in Denison. Denison-Schleswig, led by No. 2 doubles champs Isaac Leinen and Wyatt Johnson, won the team title with 27 points, followed by Kuemper Catholic (22) and St. Albert (18).

Cyclone times drop fast at Hawkeye Ten meet

 CARROLL (May 6) -- Temperatures remained on the cool side, but the performances at Thursday night’s Hawkeye Ten Conference Co-Ed Track Meet sure made it look and feel a lot more like May. The Harlan Community girls placed second out of 11 teams at Carroll Athletic Stadium while the HCHS boys finished fourth.

Harlan FFA Seniors Conduct Food for America Program

    HARLAN -- Two Harlan FFA seniors recently worked to improve the agricultural literacy of Harlan Community Schools’ preschool through fifth grade students.    Reanna Obrecht and Julia Schechinger conducted the Food for America program, which is an educational program that focuses on teaching young people about agriculture and connects FFA members with their community.        Fourteen classes were visited during the program which included: N

Kevin “Hoss” Krohn, 62

    HARLAN -- Kevin “Hoss” Eugene Krohn, 62, Harlan, died May 22 at his home.    Services will be held Thursday, May 27 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca.  Visitation is Thursday from 9-11 a.m.
